A/C clicking while getting charged?

Hello, I'm trying to recharge my air conditioner. I was told to charge it with the car on and the A/C running at full blast. Is this correct? Or is the car suppose to be off? Secondly. When i tried to charge the air conditioner while the car was on, it would not take anymore freon and it would just click. The low side guage went to the "alert" and the high side still showed "needs service". Plz help, it is starting to get hot here in the bay and i need my A/C running. THanks
