This seems to be a repetitive question but I did the search and everyone has individual symptoms and sounds when it comes to this topic.

The noise is loudest at idle (around 800 to 1000). At around 2000 and 3000 it turns into a constant noise ( sort of like an electric razor but lower pitched) with a vibration feel. I can even feel it in the clutch a little. Above 3000 no vibration, feels okay, and I can't hear the noise (don't know if it is gone or the engine is drowning it out).

Anyway, it's deeper than a lifter tick but lighter than a knock. Seems to be louder on the drivers side of the engine bay. I had a leaky power steering pump so I thought maybe it was burnt up makin that racket so I took the belt off. Still there. Same for the alternator belt and compressor belt. Still there. So I know it is none of the accessories or their pulleys.

I removed the valve cover and checked to make sure everything was tight (head bolts, etc). Visually everything looked fine but I don't know what else there was to look at. Can you confirm bent valves by looking under valve cover?

I plan on dropping the pan this evening to check the crank and bearings, as well as the crank pulley and sprocket.

Could this be something related to the turbo? or are the rpm's a coincedence? boost picks up good at about 3000 rpm. Sorry this is so long

Thanks for any input. :thumb:

Don't know if this has anything to do with this problem but I was running rich for a few days due to the bigger injectors and I think my TPS is about to take a dump (idles up and down, idles high, idles low, dies, blah blah). This may not be related but just in case....

Balance shaft out of synch?

Anything is possible at this point. But I just got back from about a 20 min drive and it is profoundly louder when hot. About 4 buddies all stuck our heads close to the engine to do a survey of where they all thought it was coming from. I had everything from fuel rail to turbo to ex. manifold. They all agreed it wasn't internal but I am still not convinced. It's so loud it echoes throughout the entire engine compartment so it's hard to tell. I'm gonna try to get a stethescope tomorrow. I sound like a freakin dirt bike goin down the road.

Anyway about the balance shaft - this noise just started a couple days ago and I've been driving it about 2 or 3 weeks since the rebuild. If it were the balance shaft would it have started immediately or just now?

No, if it was the balance shaft you would have noticed it from the start.

Okay, well I need to do a little more investigating under the hood for anything rubbing, loose, etc. All I know (or I am pretty sure) is that it is up top. Might be something under the timing cover. Thanks for the input!

Balance shaft Belt OMG

Oh well, I needed a new timing belt anyway. 200 miles on that stinkin timing belt and already have 2 teeth shredded. But I guess it could have been the same thing that broke the balance shaft belt. Wonder why this happened? Crank pulleys/sprocket too tight? Doesn't seem right to me. WTF Any ideas?

Damage to the two belts at the same time would seem to indicate foreign object damage, but shortly after a rebuild, the object may not be so foreign.

I have a jdm 6 bolt and it was just fresnend up i removed the b/s and at idle it sounds not bad bu t the higher u rev it up it sounds like something ratling or vibrating really bad and a really loud noise kinda like u said. Like a dirtbike going down the road LOL!! What is causing this i have the motor back out right now! My noise was coming around by the oil cover timing belt cover area! Someone said something about a b/s synchro or something earlier in this thread????

He was suggesting the balance shaft be out of synch, but since you removed yours that is N/A.

Wret - I am just glad that the problem ended up being external. I was hoping I wouldn't have to pull that thing out again. :barf: I have become an expert at timing belt installation now though. I never noticed anything foreign under the cover unless it is behind the crank sprocket (haven't removed that yet). I'll take a couple pics of the belts soon as the batteries charge in my dig. camera LOL. Maybe we can tell better from that. Be back shortly.

this is dumb but it happened to me,check your oil pan bolts, ther are long bolts and short bolts,I put long bolts rite under the timing belt and it shredded the belt.you will see what im talking about when you look at it....you need short oil pan bolts below the timing belt to provide clearence otherwise the long bolt screws up into your belts. :thumb:

^ ^ ^ Yup.

Also, suspect balance shaft bearings.

Don't know nothing about the balance shaft bearings...are they internal? How do you know if they r bad? Thanks for the replies everyone!

So my balance shaft belt was broken completely and the timing belt a little chewed. I couldn't get my camera to work like I was going to but anyway...

I ordered the new belts and installed them on my car. As I was replacing the balance shaft belt, I noticed the bolt that holds the gear on was loose ( I mean WAY finger loose).
So I tightened that up on my way. Get the timing belt and everything back on, cranked on the car to make sure everything was okay ( always expecting something at this point). I had my brother watch for anything under the hood while I started. Immediately when it started he yells shut it off!!

Now what? He turns around and starts looking in the yard. He said I don't know what it was but it almost hit me. WTF My balance shaft gear has exploded in 50 pieces and came flying out in every direction. :toobad:

Anyway, now after all this, I have ordered a BS eliminator kit because it is ticking me off. Nate at Slow Boy said I can get that out without taking the motor out so I am going to give that a try.

I was just wondering what the crap could have shredded my belt then busted the gear? Related? Also if anyone has any pointers on removal w/ motor in the car, please feel free.

My guess would be that the balance shaft bearing siezed. I've never seen a sprocket explode, but it would guess it's feasible. It would DEFINITLY break the balance shaft belt, which could then get tangled up in the timing belt in such a way to strip teeth/shred the belt.
