Possible spun bearing?

Well I won't get a change to take the oil pan off tonight. But here's how it happened. I was driving along and mashed the gas, and about a minute later I heard a horrible knock. Came home, climbed under the car and heard it coming from the oil pan :( I let the car run and took each spark plug wire off, but instead of stopping the knock only got louder. The knock goes away while Im driving, but at idle or in neutral it knocks like crazy.

What bearing have I most likely spun? It sounds like its knocking from the side closest to the tranny.

Hmm, a rod bearing would make it knock more at higher rpm's so we can cross that off the list. Maybe someobe else will help.

you could be experiencing piston slap. you could also just not have enough oil in your car. you do have the dipstick cover until the full mark right?

Yes, it's up to the full mark. I'm gonna research piston slap right now, but could I get a little more insight on that from you? Thanks..

Could it be the flywheel right next to the oil pan? If so, does the tranny have to be dropped?

I recently spun a rod bearing in my Talon and it ticked all the time. At idle, reving, WOT everything. At higher RPM only doesn't necessarily it may not be spun. Good luck.

Well when its driven, it doesn't do it in the 1k-3k range, and after that its like a winding sound. Torque converter? Starter?

After dropping the pan, I did find metal flakes in the oil, and in the pan. I also found a "chunky" flake on my oil screen. I think you may be right, Defiant.

I'm mechanically inclined, but i've never ventured into the bottom end before. I'm working on a 4g64. Any guidance in checking the balance shaft bearings would be appreciated. Thanks...

I assume the motor is out of the car....pull your balance shafts and take a look at the shafts, you will know rite away if something is wrong.your fingernail is the best tool, scrape your fingernail across the bearing surface and if your nail catches any groves or gouges then the chances are your bearing is bad.If you have a bad bearing then your oil pressure will drop.what was your oil pressure?

The motor is in the car still. I don't have a oil pressure gauge, and I haven't checked it. I'm hoping to check which bearing it is while still in the car. I'm probably gonna pickup a junkyard motor ive found with 54k and swap that in.

Does this explain on cold starts why my motor had been shaking a tad bit and causing my alternator to shake violently for about 1k miles? It was getting worse and causing belt squealing.
