Hi All,

I have a problem that I can't seem to find a hint on while searching. Background: Engine Rebuild ~7000 miles ago with head reworked. Previous owner had no respect. Immediately after rebuild car would not start. After tracking thorugh many ideas the cam sensor fell into primary slot. After replacing car ran well until now. A footnote: Found an Accel Thundersport wire was causing cylinder 1 misfire under mod accelleration. Found to be a bad wire, replaced, issue subsided. Finally we get to current problem.. While driving around pulled a CEL and car seemed to drop to barely running. Pulled over and revved it, car idled up again correctly. Went home quickly. Next am started fine. On the way to work same thing occurred, but could not get it to idle correctly. Called tow truck and then get it home. Problem continued. CEL code P 300 - "Random Cylinder Misfire". Reset and (car cold) started fine and idled up. After warming to temp it began with the same problem. So I checked wires again, all good, just to be safe tried a new set. Continued. Well I figured it may be cam sensor again. Just for giggles I replaced it with a new one to no avail. Car continues to pull CEL after reset. I am going to check spark plugs, gap, and ensure getting spark, but any other suggestions? This problem only seems to crop up under operating temperature. Thanks for ideas,

Steve

I tested out the spark and found 1 of the 2 coils appears to be firing incorrectly. I get no spark from 2 of the terminals after it warms up. I am going to replace the coil, does this sound like the correct diagnosis? Any other folks with a similar issue in the past?

I tracked the problem to the ignition module and found it to be faulty. It was allowing spark to 1 of the 2 coils, but even this became a problem without warming up. Swiched it out with one from a friends car and it works good now. Expensive little parts...

Thanks to those who helped...

Mine started doing this same crap a couple days ago. It threw a CEL and would start to misfire. It also happens only after the car is warmed up. Sometimes if I shut the car down and restart it the problem will go away for a while. I took it to Autozone to get it scanned and also got the random cylinder misfire code. How can I tell which module it may be? Is it the same part just two of them or are they different? Also you said it was expensive. How much? I'm running short, I just spent 2700 on a tranny, clutch, flywheel, etc.

There is only one module...2 coils. I've heard the module called several things, most commonly Power transistor or Ignition Control Module. It is the big 8 pin connector immediately beside the coils. Have you determined which ones are not getting spark?

Hi Guys,

The part was directly next to the coils immediately behind the fuel rail. It is the 8 pin "box" that runs into the wiring harness that plugs into the coils. It ran $130 but I had to do some searching and went through a friend who owns a shop to get a discounted rate. I am not sure what retail would be. It seems to have fixed the problem so far. I did pull a CEL but I have yet to get to a code scanner to figure it out. The car runs extremely well so I am not expected a similar issue.
