Alright let me try to explain this one as best I can...
Okay... It doesn't matter what gear I am in, but whenever I accelerate, whether WOT or half throttle or 1/64 of the freakin throttle, whenever it gets around 3500-4000 RPM's it starts cutting out and backfiring, like off and on. SO when I get up to those RPM's it will no longer accelerate and it will backfire, then do nothing then backfire, then nothing.. etc. and it never clears up, black smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Is my spark getting too weak... like say a weak coil? Sorry for length, please help.

It sounds more like a spark issue than anything else. Black smoke usually indicates a very rich condition (unburned fuel). I'd start by pulling your plugs and seeing what they look like. If they're fouled then either the coil or wires may need to be replaced. Also make sure that your gap is set correctly (mine is at .028) otherwise you will have stuttering and backfiring problems.

While you're at it, check for boost leaks as this can be adding to your symptoms.

Hey thanks for that...
Yeah I pulled a plug a few days ago really expecting to see black as night on them but what I found surprised me, they were black but had white specs on them, which is odd considering thats a sign of running lean.
The wires are brand new, the plugs are all gapped at .028... as for boost leaks, i'm going to check that but I have the GM maft setup as blowthrough, which doesn't leave much room that COULD cause a problem with metered air escaping, but more than likely considering the age of the car the TB shaft seals are leaking. I am leaning towards ignition coils though. Anyone else think of something possibly making my car do this?

dunno i'm in the same boat as you, i wanna figure this damn thing out! plugs were replaced 20miles ago and they are black as all hell. and the same symptoms as you i need help 2, thx

Well here is what i'm gonna do, I know my alternator is on its way out so i'm going to replace it, then I am going to buy the ignition coil and throw it on there and if it fixes it, I will let you guys know, should be within the next few days. If I STILL have the problem... then i'm going to need some help diagnosing this. WTF

I've got the same problem as both of you. If I hold the throttle around 75% it doesn't stutter or backfire. But if I go WOT it will. OMG

OK mines FIXED, about time ok my problem was the lower ic pipe fell off. I am running too much boost for the factory rubber hoses, causing the pipe to swell when the turbo was spooled. it was off just slightly i didn't notice it untill i did a oil change on it tonight. My compression is alright it is all with in 140-150 range.. Thanks everyone!

compression results = 155 across the board. I have check my intercooler piping and they are all good and real tight, no holes.
ALSO tonight I figured out that as long as I don't build boost I can go through the entire RPM range, just takes FOREVER to climb those RPM's with your foot barely pushin the pedal down.

boost leak, plugs & wires covers a good percentage of the problem you're describing. Have you try them yet as previously suggested?

Well my wires are brand new. Nothing special though like accels or magnacores they are just stock ones. My plugs are decently new ngk bpr6es's. Should I maybe try a colder plug??? like maybe the bpr7es's?
I'll check for a boost leak again just to make sure though. But the damn thing only freaks out if I start boosting at ANY PSI, just 1 PSI will do the trick of bucking and stumbling.
i'm tired of people going :tease: :talon:

Replaced my plugs, wires, and ignition coils. Problem NOT solved still doing the same thing. So now I don't know whats going on. ECU I will replace next I suppose, lots of money for this stuff argh.

I completely forgot to mention that since you have a 1G you could have some leaking caps and that could be causing your problems. If you find anything suspicious, PM the wiseman Steve (under that screen name) and he should be able to help.

Good luck!

What was the result of your REAL BOOST LEAK TEST as you last said you were going to do?

I'm having a similar prblem with misfring occasionlly. I used a timing light and found that I wasn't getting spark to cyl 2&3. I replaced the plugs, wires, and corresponding coil. The problem went away for about a week and now is back. It runs fine sometimes and on 2 cylinders other times. I know that compression is low in the two cylinders where I'm having problems. How would this effect my spark problem?
thanks for any help, Andy

How low of compression numbers is low on those two cylinder? If you knew they were low why didn't you take care of it instead of continuing to drive under those conditions. :nono: That's no way to treat your DSM. :)

Well, I bought the car almost 2 years ago and only recently did the compression test. The results were: 155, 130, 110, 155. The car uses a little oil but has been running fine for the 2 years I have owned it. I don't have the money or time right now to mess with a rebuild. Does low copression somehow effect spark getting to the cylinders? I realize that low compression is not an ideal situation but how will it hurt the car if I drive it under "these conditions?"

Don't know why it's killing your spark over time (If you're 100% sure there aren't any, which I question) but I would suggest doing a wet test and a leak down to at least know what's causing the low compression numbers. Whether or not it will do damage to your car if you continue to dry it depends on what is in play. I'll give you one example, unburnt fuel can drip down bad rings, thinning your oil and cause damage to rod bearings.

The boost leak test that I did the CORRECT way showed a couple leaks in the throttle body, but I just replaced those seals and it is still doing the same thing. I'm pretty sure it is the ECU now because sometimes when I go to start it in the morning my guages won't zero out and I have to tap near it to get it to start. The check engine light flickers every once in awhile when I first turn the key on in the morning too.

So does anyone want to buy some stuff? I'm parting out my car now everything for sale has less than 200 miles on them. Just look in my profile, and I bought an new ECU over the weekend and it still didn't fix it so that is also for sale.
