I was driving back to school other day and my car shut off. I looked down and all my dumbie lights turned on, motor shut off, and RPMS were at 0. Pulled over to the side of the road and checked under the hood and everything seemed fine. Go to try and restart and it cranks but wont go. I pulled a plug wire off and Im not getting any spark.
I had the car towed to Midas and they have been looking at it now for 2 days. They think it is the Ignition transformer, but they dont know for sure. Called AMS and they dont know for sure either. Since the car is at Midas I cant physically look at it now but any help would be great.
Thanks,
Bryan

If it's the power transistor that has gone bad, you will usually get spark in 2 cylinders. A friend of mine is experiencing the same problem right now and I'll let you know what fixes his tomorrow when we look at it.

I am having the exact same problem as you. Except that i am NOT getting power to my fuel pump. CHeck yours. Ill let you know if i figure it out. You let me know to. ;)

Hey! This must be the car that just got towed in today. I noticed on the Safc it was reading no rpms while cranking. I put an OBDII scanner on it and it has a crankshaft posisition code. I had a chance to get it on the lift and take the wheel, splash shield and crank pulley off today before we finsihed up. It appears at first glance that the pick-up rotator wheel is hitting the crank trigger and has knocked the metal part on the outside off. Only one part of the rotator looks like its hitting though. The crankshaft has a slight amount of end play but I'm not sure if its enough to cause problems. Its possible that one part of the rotator wheel is bent and is taking out the sensor. Ill get into it further first thing in the morning.

I noticed it has what appears to be a brand new harmonic balancer. Did it just recently chew up the old one?

that was my first guess

crank angle sensor got eaten.
either C walk or someone messed something up very very recently

It turned out to be his crank position sensor. He has a 90 though so I dunno what's different with yours.

Well it turned out to be a lot worse then I though. I had the car towed to AMS and they ran a diagnostics (SP?) test and found the crank senors wasnt getting a reading. When they pulled the front case off.... The balance shaft belt snapped because the balance shaft was seized. So they are in the process of tearing down the pan and installing a balance shaft removal kit, oil and water pump, and the new crank sensor. Lets just hope there are no peices of bearings or anything in the pan.

Ok here goes the order of events that caused the whole fiasco.

At some point, someone put alot of weight on the oil pan with a jack. Probibly lifted the whole car up by the pan possibly. It crushed a nice perfectly square jackplate indention into the oil pan which pushed the sump part of it up about one inch and dead into the pick-up screen. That of course caused oil starvation. The front balance shaft was not totally siezed, actually it freezed up alot once i spun it with a 3/8" impact gun. The rear balance shaft totally spit its bearing out into the oil pan though. That in turn made the rear shaft wallow around and totally screw the oil pump gear casing. Luckily the bearing came out in 2 big pieces, and did not get chewed up into little pieces sending them into the oiling system. The rod caps looked good, no signs of heat or discolorization at all. I left the front shaft in, as its not easy to get out and flip the bearings in the car. I installed a new oil pump, balance shaft removal kit, cleaned the hell out of the crankcase, oil pan, filter and everything I could. I installed a new factory water pump as the one that was in it was leaking out of the weep hole and looked like the cheapest most generic water pump I ever saw.

I started it up tonight and the engine sounds really good. Its hard to say if there was any more damage anywhere, but you may have gotten lucky. Everything at this point looks and sounds good. Your O2 housing was also TOTALLY seperated from the turbo. One bolt that was a few threads from falling out was all that was holding it on. Once I unbolted the downpipe, it actually flipped around and fell off the turbo. I installed new bolts with new lock washers and new locktite that we just got for the same problem with our turbo kits, so you shouldnt have the problem again.

Im almost done with it, I just have to install some pulleys, belts, motor mount, splash shield and then we'll test drive it and check for leaks and noises, then give ya a call.

Thanks a lot Eric. Im glad I ended up sending the car to you guys. Now its time to go fight Midas (my mistake for taking it there) for installing a cheap ass water pump (less then a year ago) and not saying anything about the balance shaft belt (new timing on the 2/17/05). And thanks for the 02 bolts... I noticed my downpipe was loose the other day and totally lost one bolt. The AGP bolts didnt seem to stay tight anywhere on the whole kit.

I finished it up this morning. It seems to run and sound great. The exhaust sounds good as there are no more leaks anymore. It definatly feels like it needs some tuning though. Give Eric a call sometime and schedule an appointment and I can go street tune the hell out of it.

That thing needs a bigger downpipe though. The O2 housing is full 2.5" and the downpipe is 2" untill after the cat, then it goes back to 2.5".

They definatly did a shady job on that timing belt though. You can tell they dont know what bolts go back where and so on. Im just glad you got out of the situation without needing a new motor just yet.

Well ill be coming back soon..... I have no 02 voltage. Also im going to bring it in ASAP for a tune.... dyno or raod.... it needs it. And hook me up with a good deal on a DP and ill buy one when i get it tuned :shhh:

Oh yeah, I forgot its fwd. We can see what kind of numbers it can put down.

I noticed the O2 voltages werent responding too well. I tried playing with the AFC a bit and it seemed it was reading too low. But a new O2 sensor and some tuning will keep the fuel trims in check and that thing will drive like a dream.

And everything comes crashing down. Had my car towed back to AMS today. Motor sounds to be completly shot... waiting for the dreaded call from them tomorrow. Why did I buy a 2g.... I hate DSM's.... yet I must buy another one.

Anyone want to donate a 1g awd to a DSMer in need?

I swear man, 2g's are the devil. It seems like nothing EVER EVER goes right with them. I was really thinking and hoping that this one was gonna make it thru this ordeal. Everything in the motor looked good, the rod caps had NO heat discoloration at all and the oil wasent contaminated.

This sucks man. Ill take a look at it tomorrow if I get done with ANOTHER 2g I'm working on, and give you a call.
Peace,
Eric #2

P.S. Why is my sig edited AGAIN?? It was a picture of my galant and my name for god sake!
