Let the old man drive my car

I have a 96 eagle talon awd with every bolt on except a turbo upgrade, fuel pump, and logger.

My old man decided to take my car out. He dumps the clutch at 4k and doesn't shift until 8k. There was a pop (like backfiring). When we got back home I noticed one of my NKG plugwires popped out. What the hell happened? Will the motor be ok?

Pop the wire back on, see what happens. The rev limit is 7k on the 4g63, so 8k isnt a good thing for it, but I always thought there was a rev limiter?

Mine's at 7500 I think and I had always thought it was like that for all 4g63's? Don't know for sure though, I just know what mine is.

He took it about 600 rpms past redline. He's so damn used to shifting at around 8grand anyway. :|

That's great your redline is 7k. He took it to 8k. Either way, that's past redline. What bad can come of this?

well since he did over rev i would def. do a compression test on the car..over-rev can do many things...most of the time it puts play in the springs(and the head goes)..but since ur dad did drive the car bck i doubt nething happened but i would def. do a compression test on it..and u will know from there...u mite have just gotten lucky..

if your engine held together u should be all set, if anything let go u would have heard it and felt it. Usually if u over rev the engine, ur rings can wear a bit which will cause some oil burning... i did that to my dads n mine yard work truck, ford ranger, n it daamged the rings...but i think ur engine should be all set, ur plug popping off is weird...my guess would be becasue a bit too much voltage? too much rattle in the engine? coincidence? just connect it back, start it up let it idle, check the oil if its black change it, then take it around the block, look at the smoke thats coming out of the pipe, if its normal then ur all set, if thers a bit of blue puff, ur old man ####ed ur rings up, if theres white smoke (happens rarely but its possible to shoot a headgasket by overrevving) then thats death smoke, replace ur gasket.

Only 500-1000 RPM I wouldnt worry about it, I know someone who mis shifted, and went upto 8400 and his clutch was in like 6 peices (literally) but everything else was perfect.

I drove it around and everything seemed fine. I'm doing a comp test soon, and will look for any smoke tomorrow. Will the smoke be present at idle?

Why would he rev it to 8000 rpm ? What kind of car does he usually drive ? An RX-7 ? ;)

yes it most likely will be. another place you may want to look for any vapors is that port on your valve cover that is routed from the intake. if you take that off while it is idling, and you have any vapors coming out of it......then you know some gases are getting past the rings too. and while it might have been a backfire that you heard when your Pa bounced off the limiter, i would guess that since your plug wire popped out, that you probably had some detonation going on there. i actually had a plug blow apart once under the exact same conditions. you may want to check and make sure you arent too lean in the higher rpms if you ahve nay logging equipment.

I wouldn't worry about the revving it that high, its not doing you any good to turn it that high without a turbo that can flow air up that high but I turn turn mine to over 8k (revlimiter reset to 8250) every day with 19x,xxx mile long block ;)

My personal suggestion... keep any and all extra keys HIDDEN.
Do not tell ANYONE where one is unless you loose one and they have to bring it to you.

Another suggestion, I always have a spare key in my wallet. Because most the time people like myself forget them in the ignition, or they drop them between the seat and the door. But I even solved that one by putting my keys on a chain with a d ring snap on one end that is clipped to a belt loop on my person. They reach far enough to use the keys in the ignition(with slack), and short enough not to hit the ground if I "drop" them.

But as far as damage.. I doubt it.

My friends civic had the same problem i fixed it for him its just because the spark plug was never tight enough when they where installed we thightened his really tight and he never had that problem since

i dont want to hijack ur thread but i am also wondering about the rev limiter. Everytime i race i check my afc to see wat the highest rpm was and i once hit 76**. Shouldnt the car hit the rev limiter at 7500?

ummmm.......i would suggest not letting your daddy drive the DSM no more :thumbdown
that would probably be a good start to fixing your potiential problem. also take out his car and dumb it at 4k and take it to 9k and see how he likes it!
