I have a 6 bolt motor that was just rebuilt. Bored and honed +.020, +.020 2g 8.5:1 compression pistons, new main and rod bearings, machined 1g big rods, 3 angle valve job, new valves, resurfaced head -.007", 3g lifters, and all new timing stuff. We got the motor put back together and started it up, now there is a very loud clicking sound and I can't determine where it is coming from. I know what lifters sound like, I'm sure that is not the problem and it is a lot louder than lifter clicking. Also, I pulled the valve cover off to check the lifters, they seem fine. It does it through the entire rpm band and never goes away. There is plenty of oil, and the oil pressure is good. Does anyone have an idea of what this could be or what I should check for?

EDIT: The balance shafts were also removed.

Its hard to tell not being able to hear it in person but did you check the clearence on the bearings when you were putting it together. When i built my motor i checked and one was wrong so i had to get new bearings and all so the clearence was right. Does it even sound like a rod. It might be a pistons slaping on the cylinder wall. Did you check the clearence of the pistons to wall?

Yes, I did assemble everything myself. All of the clearances should be fine, and the timing is perfect. From the looks of it, the whole thing is coming apart again. :thumbdown

There is no "should be" in bottom assembly. You do it right the first time, with the right clearances, or you rebuild the motor again..

If it is indeed rod knock. (You should be able to tell the difference between rod knock and lifter tick!! Listen for it if is originating in the block. or the head.) You might be pulling the block back apart to make sure that you clearances that "should be" correct, are in fact, correct.

:thumb: :thumb: How do you say they should be correct. If you didnt check them then you have no basis to say that on. I though mine were right also but when i checked with the plasti gauge it was wrong.
