Longshot, but...has anyone had an improperly working stock Temp Gauge?

We want to try and sell my gf's black 1G gsx and iron out all the little kinks. One of the things that has plauged the car since we got it was an improperly working temp gauge on the cluster. Instead of it going to the middle, it climbs all the way up to the last mark on the HOT side, even though the engine is not overheating. We did notice that aftermarket gauge overlays were installed on the cluster, but we weren't sure if that would cause the issue. We've replaced the temp sensor with a factory new one and checked the wiring harness going to the sensor. We've also had the temperature diagnosed at the sensor and it reads correct temps. So all that leaves is the gauge cluster itself or needle. Is there a way to adjust it back to calibrate it back to the center? Has this happened to anyone else?

What I'd so is, let it warm up to normal operating temperature, pull the needle off, and put it back on in the middle. Whoever did the overlays probably didn't line the needle back up right.
