if my car is sitting still and at idle with clutch out it makes a pretty loud scraping noise. once the clutch goes in or the car is in gear and driving it's fine. i'm using mobile 1 synthetic gear oil. anyone know of any kinda additive or something i can use to get the dang thing quiet? it's really annoying and embarrasing when people are around. thanks!

1. Is it the original clutch, or have you installed a replacement/aftermarket one?

2. If you have installed a replacement, did you install it yourself? If so, did you verify that the clutch was in good order before you installed it? Did you use a new throwout bearing?

3. Regardless of #1 or #2, the noise indicates that there is something undesirable going on inside the bell housing of the transaxle; the only way to tell for sure is to remove the transaxle and have a look.

4. In regards to #3, stock up on beer before you do this.

it's not the clutch or throwout bearing. i know it's not that. just take my word on it. it's not on the bell housing side, it's the other side of the tranny. but right now i'm running 75w90 gear oil. would anyone recommend a different weight?

I'll take your word for it, but if the input shaft of the transaxle isn't spinning, why would the sound come from the other side?

if the car is in neutral and the clutch is out, the shaft will still be spinning inside the transmission. but it just won't be meshed up with any of the gears.

my bad, I misread the above.

I think it's normal to hear the input shaft (and the gears on the shaft) spinning inside the transaxle with the clutch pedal released, but with the car not in gear. To hear a loud scraping sound, definitely not normal. Hope the bearings on that shaft are okay.

i'm wondering about the tranny myself and plan to go with a tre tranny when i can. but hoping to see if i can use an alternative fluid or additve or something to see if it'll quiet down though 1st (i'm tired of pulling my tranny). i've used bg synchroshift but didn't do much for it. seems to be doing better with the mobile 1 synthetic actually. but looking at all options as far as types of oils, weights, and additives. thanks!

that's easy to say if you've got about an extra $1600 or so laying around. if i had it i would've bought one already. but don't have it. so lookin at the cheaper option. i guess i'm running the best fluid there is or something. i dunno. only reason that i can think of since i have no reply's to this yet. oh well....

well if i'm gonna get a new tranny i'm gonna upgrade. why would i wanna keep a stock tranny in. but i'll worry about that when the time comes.

regardless, i guess i can't get any answers to this so this thread isn't helping at all to the question i asked.

that sounds so typical.

How many things do you know spin when the transmission isnt in gear?

Check the TOB

My car was doing exactly the same thing after a shop installed my act, it turned out to be TOB.

well, this is my 3rd tob within the year. put a new clutch and all in when i first bought the car about a year ago. then changed the 1st one cause i thought it was bad. took the tranny out again cause i had to pull my motor and the tob got dirt in it while it was out so i changed it again. this is my 3rd one so i know it's not the tob. unless they all just make noise.

so it's either the tranny or the gear oil. but it sure is hard to get an answer about just different types of gear oil. uggghhh!!!! what the hell?!?!? guess ya'll don't know.

and as for things that spin while it's not in gear. well, if the clutch is pressed in, nothing's gonna spin. if it's not pushed in, the shaft that the tob rides on is gonna spin at least. other than that i dunno.

well both have been answered, so I don't see how you think it's hard to get an answer?

I can tell you what you want to hear, but it isn't always the right thing. I'm with everyone else, TOB. If it's your tranny, there is nothing else you can do besides rebuild it or buy a new one. You can always throw some sawdust in there to keep it quiet until it explodes, that is IF it's the tranny that is bad.

nah, haven't fixed it yet. it's quiets down though when it gets warm. but when it's cold it's really loud. anyway, i checked the gear oil last night and it was full. if gear oil doesn't quiet it down, i guess i'll be buying a new tranny sometime soon.

Not to jack this, but a friend of mine is having a similar problem. He installed an ACT2600 not too long ago and for some reason cheaped out on getting a new TOB. Now when he lets off the clutch quick in neutral he hears a slight chattering sound (that's the best way to describe it). If he lets off real slow, no noise. Is that the sound that the TOB will make from contact with the pressure plate?

Unless hes rolling in neutral, the tob is shot.

And when you install TOBs, try to atleast use some grease on the inner lip, it does 'retain' a smidgen that helps with break-in.
Nope, this is when the car is not rolling. That's what I was afraid of. Hey at least he saved $28 by not getting a new one the first time. Thanks for the advice.
