Burning oil like crazy, how much time do I have?

OK, My car just started burning oil like crazy. It wasn't burning much oil at all until a couple days ago. I shoots out blueish smoke like crazy getting it going in first gear and smells like hell. I notice no performance loss or anything except the smoke and smell.

My question is how can I fix this, and howlong do I have before my engine totally dies?

I have money saved up for a 50-trim and injectors and a SAFC, but I think I will have to buy a new engine or pay to have this one rebuilt.

Thank you for the replys.

Rings seldom go bad on a DSM unless it has been driven extremely hard and/or highly modded. I blow a little blue smoke on taking off, and revving the engine in neutral. I believe my problem is valve stem seals, but these are the main possibilities:

1) valve stem seals
2) piston rings
3) turbo seals
4) some say PCV valve can cause blowing blue smoke, but I'm not sure exactly how

Thanks for your help guys, i noticed there is another thread just like this on this page, and I'm convinced it's the valve seals, but until I can get a compression test done, I will replace the pvc valve just for good measure and if compression is ok, I'll just get the seals changed. Oh well, I guess the 50-trim will wait... again. I hate DSM's so much, but I can't get out of them  I'll be in love again when it's fixed though.

Just to piss you off more about dsms so you will get out of it and sell it to a dsm lover I will say that your rings are bad. :thumb:

Don't say it man. I kind of want a rebuilt engine because next year I will be going away to school 400 miles away and will need to make the trips in my can, so I want it to be the most reliable a DSM can be, even though that isn't very reliable.

Relaiable dsm? :p They dont exist. Ive been doing this too long to know that.

I'm from St. Pete (Tampa Bay area) Florida, and go to school in Charlottesville, Virginia. I've made the trip up and back (well, well over 400 miles ;)) twice this semester, with only minor problems (blowout--damn Kuhmo Ecsta 711s :p).

However, I do think the second trip to FL was what killed my valve seals. Not sure why...maybe they didn't like the 80-85% oil pressure for 10 hours straight LOL :D. Apparently a compression test won't show you that it is the valve seals for sure though :(

Oh, ok. How much does anyone think it would be to have the valve seals changed?

I am currently going thru the same problem. I took it to the garage to get a valve job done (only putting out 4 psi of oil pressure when i should be putting out around 17), once that was fix my car really started to smoke think blue smokel. The problem .... piston rings. I'm gunna say thats most likely your problem too.

My question is... is it worth replacing the rings and take the chance of finding other things wrong on the bottom end, or should i just replace the whole engine??

thanks

I too am blowing oil. It only happens at boost though. I'm trying to isolate the problem, as well. What are symptoms of valve seals?

No... none at all during startup. I do get it underboost. Pretty bad... I think it may be seals on the turbo. I did relocate the oil line. I've heard the mitsu turbos dont handle the increased oil pressure very well. Is this true?

Also, I dont post new messages and would like to make a new post. How do I do that? The FAQ's only talk about replies, and voting.

My car is only producing blue smoke only at take-off and a small amount at idle. If it were the rings, wouldn't it do that all the time instead of these times. This is why I think it is the valve seals.
Can anyone tell me how much a valve seal job would rang in price?
Also, if it were in fact the piston rings, wouldn't the car blow blue smoke all the time?
Thank You

If you can manage to take the head off the car yourself you can get away from a valve job with all the new gaskets to put it back on for 300ish.

I went with a metal HG, all stock replacement valves, lapped them myself (a machine shop would have done a much better "valve job" cutting the seats and valves to match for 160), had the head cleaned and surfaced, misc gaskets, valve stem seals.

Lapping them yourself is ghetto it still leaves some pits in the seats.

I'm a NT person, but had same burning off oil problem.

Do a compression test....then a wet compression test. When you do the wet test compared to the results of the regular compression test, this will tell you if the ring(s) is/are bad.

I had one bad ring with the other 3 on their way out. Basically oil was just pouring through so I continuously had to replenish it.

My motor went through a simple rebuild. Got an upper gasket kit from Dodge that included pretty much every gasket, seal, and bearing you need, MLS headgasket, piston rings, timing belt, water pump....everything almost. Then the motor and injectors were throughly cleaned.

If you can do it yourself or a friend that can make a good deal w/you, definately do that. Shop around for best price on parts....I noticed different Mitsu's have different prices for different parts.
