This is for my brother's stock (except 16G, fuel pump, exhaust and boost controller) '92 TSI FWD, 156k miles.

Before he moved away, the car threw a CEL even though it seemed to be running okay. We replaced the coil pack because that was the light it threw. Now he lives 1000 miles away and the light came on again, along with random/intermittent sputtering. The sputtering seemed to only happen once the car was warmed up, and the car wouldn't stall - it would act funny and almost stall, down on power, etc. I highly doubted it was the coil again, if it was even a problem in the first place.

He's not much of a car guy and was about to spend $200 from AutoZone or something on a replacement so I said ok, I'll send you one (I had another that worked fine in my friend's 11 second car that was totalled). I sent him that, and after he installed it, the car ran fine for a few days then did the same thing. The CEL came back and my gut's saying the codereader will tell him it's the coil pack again.

Anyone know what else to check? I replaced the caps in his ECU about a year ago and it seemed to be fine, but if it's not the ECU I don't know what else to check. Any help's appreciated if someone's seen this before. Thanks!

From '91 on, the Power Transistor Module is what generates the signal the ECU uses to check for a code 44. Yours could be flaky or your wiring could be. This circuit checks that the coil is getting power and the the PTM is pulsing the other side of the coil. The wire from the PTM to the ECU could be bad too.
