Push starting a car? Can it be done?

I used to do it all the time with my old Ford truck, turn the key on and roll it forward in 1st gear then let the clutch out and it would start. I need to get my car to a repair shop to have the starter fixed and I was wondering if this would work on our DSM's? Has anyone tried it?

yea it *should* work, just make sure to push it to a real good speed cause 3000lbs and a heavy transmission is goin to require alot of momentum to get it kicked up.

And since you've done it before I dont need to tell you again, but for the people who might do it in the future, make sure everyone who is pushing stops pushing a second or two BEFORE you pop the clutch so you dont get people ramming into the back of your car.

Try jump starting it in 2nd gear, it might be easier, but you'll have to push the clutch back in as soon as it's started.

Its in my driveway, do you think I can do it in reverse going down the driveway if i have some friends push me off really hard?

probably better off sticking it in neutral and rolling out of the driveway then having some friends push you down the street.

Again for those reading this down the line, you need a battery with some charge left or the ECU and alternator won't power up. Works fine if all you have is a bad starter that isn't jammed in the flywheel.

Just roll down the driveway backwards, and pop the clutch with it in reverse

I've had to find hills to park on for a few days before. Nothing like people at work staring at me while I push my car then jump in

Trust me its the starter. I went to hit it to see if it was frozen and the bigger part of it fell on my head and left a nice size bruise. Missing one of the bolts but found all the gears and everything else.

push starting a dsm is WAY easy. two people can do it. i know from experience

pop it in 2nd. and make sure the key is ON. i made the mistake of forgetting to turn the key on, and i felt retarded because of it.

i had to do it because the lady next door would flip $h!7 everytime i would start the car..... shes old.... maybe she wont be bothering me in a couple of years....

2nd is easier but right when it starts your gonna need to push the clutch in

i push start it in first... just get it going down an incline and jump in and put it in gear wait for the jump and it will start but dont let it shut off.

ha when i had a bad isc sometimes when id pull a turn id put it in neutral to coast around and it would kill so id just let the clutch out. once i did it with 3rd. man like every time i pulled into this gas station id do it and people would laugh and then id grind 2nd and 3rd outta there and look super kewl
