Recently I replaced the alternator on my 92 Talon. I went by the manual, but I decided that since I wouldn't be using my ac, I left the ac belt off and figured it couldn't hurt. Everthing was ok for a few days but then I noticed that at idle, the rpm would surge from 1000 to 1500. It would only do this off and on, not all the time. Then my check engine light came on and I still drove it like that for two days. I probably shouldn't have driven it, but I just got rims and tires so I wanted to drive it. Anyways, on Saturday I drove it to a friends house and when I got there the car spilled a bunch of coolant from the oveflow tank hose. I filled it up with water at his house and when I got home I put some watter wetter in it. On Sunday, I drove to my brothers house and noticed that it was getting hot, about 3/4. I let it coast most of the way until I got there and then let it cool down. On the way back home later that night, it was getting hot again and my luck I got stuck in traffic and IT WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE RED AND PAST THE H!!!!!!! I was already sweating it because I had the heater full blast and the temp wasnt dropping and I was stuck in traffic. Needless to say I made it home but the car was past the H when I got home and there was smoke coming from the radiatior cap and from under the cam sprokets. I know this can't be good and I'm expecting the worse. Did I fudge up the motor?? Time for a rebuild?? I'm pretty bummed...any ideas or comments. Please no "you are an ididot" comments. Could it have had anything to do with the alt replacement. any info please. Thanks guys...sorry for the ramble. :(

Double check the alt. belt and make sure it is on tight enough. If it's slipping, then the water pump will not pump properly.
