Well, my 7-bolt had a catastrophic problem, so I'm building up a 6-bolt and swapping it in. I still never figured out what went wrong with the 7-bolt, dealer said it was a balance shaft, but they are all fine  Anyways, I took it all apart and I found a lot of grey sludge with the consistincy of orange clean hand cleaner...very bad for oil!! Sad thing was, it was mostly by the oil return line from the turbo :thumbdown How bad do you think this is? The turbo is about 3-4 days old and has no shaft play, but doesn't spin as freely as it did. Could this be because its been sitting without oil for 2 months, or because its f*$#ed.

what was it doing before it died?

turbo could be like that from sitting around - spray some oil down the feed hole

Yea, I took the 7-bolt out and kicked it. The 6-bolt is on the engine stand as we speak getting fresh everything. I was just wondering if it messed up the new turbo.

The turbo wasn't acting up at all when it died, but I did notice some oil smoke...but that could have come from anything. I tried putting some oil in it awhile ago, and it looked like it dripped out of the exhaust turbine  I dont' know if it was there before or what, but I'll clean it all out and do it again to see if it helps.

Thanks

make sure to get that bs outta your 6 bolt while you have the chance!

I agree with Defiant. Gray material is usually from outer bearing layers.
