I was driving and would hear a faint noise like i ran over a piece of metal or something. Then all of the sudden I made a left turn and the noise got voilently out of control. I had my dad tow the car home. It sat for about a week, Started the car and it calmed down alot.

Jacked the drivers side of the car up, Started the car in neutral.. the drivers side tire was spinning forward when the car was in neutral!? turned the car off, And the part of the axle on the drivers side that goes into the tranny, It's black.. That has some play.

Took the car for a ride and the sound is GONE, It happends when I make left turns though? It's something like a grinding metal clicking noise.

Any help on what this could be, I though it was my clutch at first, But the car goes into all gears now and does not grind or anything.

I have heard it could be :

An axle?
Universal?
Balljoint?

Anyone that has had a problem like this or can help diagnose my problem, Please help it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I just drove it earlier and it didnt make the sound, Then I was at a red light and it started making a metal on metal noise horribly. I could feel the noise it was making on my foot on the clutch pedal, I have no idea what it is but I had my dad tow the car again to where I get all the hard work done on my car. We'll know this weekend I guess.

I know this thread is old LOL but I'm having the same problem.

On right hand turns ONLY i hear a bearing/grinding type noise. Someone said in this thread that it's the drive shaft. What side drive shaft would be bad, will I be able to see what is bad with or without tire on the car, and what goes bad on driveshafts that makes noise? Bearings? Keep in mind that mine only does it in right turns and never anytime else. Thanks

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Jack up the front, put hands at 12 & 6 o'clock and give it a rock...any play and the wheel bearing needs replaced. Thats a pretty good thread revival, 6.5 yrs.

If it makes that clicking noise on turns, it does sound like a front axle going bad. It's not totally bad, just starting to go bad. You should be fine to drive just something you should look to replace in the future. Not a big deal. Easy fix.

Is there anything to worry about like drivig 80+ mph down the highway

While it IS something to be worried about while going down the road at 80mph or any other speed, you're not the first or hundredth person to drive on an axle that's on its way out.

If you must drive it in current condition, be very alert to any change in behavior (it will get worse...), and don't put off the repair.

Ok someone said wheel bearing and someone said axle. Since it makes noise on right turns only what side of car is going to have the problem or could it be either side? Is it very easy to put a new wheel bearing in myself?

Actually I have good axels from my old 1g so would using FWD A/T n/t axles on this FWD M/T turbo car work? How hard to replace them in driveway for a first timer? Should I just try replacing both wheel bearings fisrt?

Figure out what's failing first. Wheel bearings will show as play in the wheel when in the air, Ie, grab it and it moves around. Not always though. Sometimes you can hear/feel it when you turn the wheel too.

If it's only when turning and it's clicking, axle is more more likely. This tends to show with clicking, grinding, other noise, and is often accompanied by a torn boot/boot grease flung around.

The bearing needs the hub taken off and bearing pressed in. The axle needs the hub partially removed and the axle popped out. Most will do an axle at home, and take hubs out then have someone press the bearing

Wasn't sure what you meant by changing the axel in the backyard and having someone else press the bearing..

If it sounds anything like this video it's the cv axle. It doesn't necessarily have to have a torn boot. Mine did it and still wore out. I just replaced mine two weeks ago. To do bearings you need to have a press to get them on the hub. Since most people don't have a press laying around they take it to a shop. If you do need to replace the bearing, make sure the shop you take it to will use a press. I had one changed out (for a sentra), and the tard just hammered it on. Two weeks later we had to replace the same bearing.

Usually clicking noises are half shafts (front axle shafts). Diagnosis is usually off side noises i.e. if your making a hard left turn and getting noise its the right side shaft and vise versa.

mine makes a clicking noise only while making a left turn. doesnt make any noise at idle and it doesnt sound anything like in the video. its alot faster and only while moving. im guessing wheel bearing. ill have a check
