hey all
today i was compression braking down a big hill... got to the bottom and gave it a little gas and blew a ton of blue smoke. took me another 2 miles or so, but i got to to do it again by doing the same thing... then it kept doing it every now and then through town.

here are my suspicions:
1. shell V-power gas... my "normal" gas station in town is being rebuilt.. and i accidentally got a full tank of V-power without paying a lot of attention to which station i was at. i never get V-power because my car seems to be slower on it and gets maybe half the gas mileage. i was down to approx 1/8 tank when i got this blue smoke
i went and got a full tank at exxon but i can still see some blue smoke if i rev it while parked (will smoke a little after rpms come down). i'm thinking maybe the v-power was cleaning shit out of my engine?

2. synthetic oil... i changed to synthetic oil approximately 5-6 weeks (1500 miles) ago. car now has 91,4xx miles on it. when i put the oil in, the oil was just a hair over the full notch while warm. now it's right between the notches... and also, about 2-3 weeks ago it was still at the level from when i put the oil in.

3. i also don't have a cat since i put on a new catback 3-4 weeks ago... but i don't think this is relavent due to the fact that it's blue smoke.

anyway... i'm going to go to NAPA in a few hours and see if i can get a compression gauge to test the cylinders...
just to save myself from looking dumb when i walk in; anyone know what size/type to ask for?

hmm.. yep.. so much for the v-power hope
i've deffinitely blow something... my oil is burning away

could this be due to running 17psi of boost? that's not too high is it?

Question: Were you running regular mineral oil before you changed it this last time? If so, that could be your problem. The "general rule of thumb" is that if the car has over 100k miles on it, synthetic is not a good idea, due to the fact that it seems like it causes more leaks than anything else. Im sure that someone else will disagree with me, but im just speaking from my own experience. Try changing your oil back to mineral, or even go with a heavier weight oil.
Also, if you have a little time on your hands, check the shaft play on the turbo. A good turbo wont have much more than 2mm up-down.

thanks for the reply :)

yes, i was running mineral oil before that. sorry for not mentioning that.. i was indeed thinking that it would help to go back to mineral.. but that seems like sort of a temporary/half-assed way to "fix" the smoke.. heh.. but i don't have a lot of extra cash on hand at the moment either.

also, i checked my turbo about 2 weeks before changing my oil and there was NO play to it at all in any direction.. and i mean NO play.. i was amazed.. spun completely freely too.

btw... the 10w-30 mobil1 synthetic made my lifter tick much, much louder... ticked me off
