Ok, my car was smoking, and i tried to determine what it was in the past. I checked compression and it all read ~150. so i thought that meant the headgasket was good. then i ran the car without the intake pipe and i saw oil spewing out of the turbo inlet, i knew the seals were shot. so i bought a new turbi (big16g) and install. i start it up for the first time today, after priming and it didnt smoke at all. i thought i had fixed my problem. i let it run for about 10-15 mins and shut it off. come back 3 hours later, start the car, and it begins smoking. the same exact thing that happened before the turbo was back, this thick white smoke that smells like burning oil. this time, however, my turbo isnt leaking out the inlet and its brand new to begin with. im at a deadend as of now. its not the turbo, its not the lines, its not the hg. the only other thing i could think of is valvestem seals, could this be true? i cant properly diagnose whats wrong anymore. if its the valvestem seals, what is the way to check that without changing them right away. would a simple compression test work? or will a wetdown/leakdown test work? please help.

but i diluted what was in the intercooler with a gallon of gasoline, and the rest i just wipe out...who knows. its just weird cause the first 10 mins it did nothing, i let it cool, come back and then it smokes...

sounds like valve seals

Agreed. Valve stem seals usually dont smoke all the time unless they are really bad. Usually just at a steady idle when there is no load on the motor or when your driving cold (I know because I need to replace mine) ;) .

could also be a clogged pcv valve. i had a similar prob. also might wanna check for leaks onto the exhaust. but im leaning towards valve seals also.

I'm gonna have to with valve seals as well, as i just had to have my head rebuilt. (well i didnt have to have the whole thing rebuilt but since its off may as well rebuild and port and polish right?) I, like you started smoking... confused i took it to have a compression test done.. well 25% leakdown. so naturally i had a head gasket done. Problem fixed right? WRONG. i take it home and its smoking the whole way. So, moral of the story i took my head off and the valve stem seals were bad. Its likely the same thing has happened to you.

damn valveseals....could they kill a turbo or was that just ironic to start leaking oil the same time the valveseals go :|

update, i figured i should start it up again today and if i thought if i saw a big cloud when i first start up, it would definetly indicate my valvestem seals are bad...well it turns out there was little smoke at all. i figured if im gonna be sure, i might as well let my car run, so i let it idle w/ a few occasional revs and it seems to have stopped. my dads friend came over and told me it was most likely the oil in the downpipe that was burning off, and whatever was left even after cleaning the intercooler. we let it run for 20 - 30 mins and at the end i seemed to have no smoke at all. my only smoking issues now are at high rpms at high throttle because my tuning is so out of whack.
