When I was driving home from work tonight (in the rain), my car began to make a loud grinding noise. I tried to listen to where it was coming from but it was so loud I couldn't pinpoint the location. It was so loud, I couldn't even listen to the radio. I pulled over to check it out but it went away. Then I started driving again and it started up again. If I press on the gas it goes away, however when I let up it just grinds like crazy. I kept on slowing down to a stop and got out to look under the hood but it wouldn't make the sound when stopped, even if I pushed on the throttle body to rev the engine it wouldn't make the sound. But sure enough when I drove off again it started. What the heck could it be?

I would go with defiant on this one, sounds like a transfer case problem.
Go to this site and check into it:

Worse case scenario, if it is the transfer case failing, dealing with satan ( dealer) regarding repairs would be like getting a lap dance from roseanne barr....... you would not ernjoy it!!!

Thanks. I doubt its the exhaust. You guys are probably right because the sound is so loud and it sounds like it is coming from all around me so it is probably right underneath my seat. Its going to be a pain to deal with Mitsu. Thanks Ill check back in if I find any more info.

b11dragone, when last was the transfer case and differential been serviced? The transfer case recall is a mechanical problem. Preventative maintenance helps in the longevity of an engine drive train performance.

I bought the car less than a year ago. Since then I haven't taken it to be serviced but I did change the transfer case fluid when I changed my tranny fluid (about 6 months ago).

Great! Now pursue the repair of Transfer case. The grinding noise you hear is a WARNING of impending xcase failure!!!!

Good luck

Thanks guys. Ill get it taken care of tomorrow and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again. That noise is scary when you don't know what it is.
