 i bought this car from a family i sort of knew from school and stuff for $1000 with a broken timing belt. the guy said the clutch and tranny and everything was good and the car was great till the tb broke..... WHAT A LIAR. anyways i found a shop to get it running for "500" (=700 in the end) and so i finally have my dsm.

and now for the problems
idle speed control- i tested, and it is bad. i went to a junk yard and they wanted 30 for one where pins 1-2 showed either infinate or no resistance- but would it work? unless i turn the biss out quite a bit i cant keep the car running when its cold but then once its warm it "idles" at about 1500

tranny- grinds atleast a little almost every single time going into second. third will also grind a lot now and very badly and it also pops out of third. i can feel a lot of movement when i let off the gas in second too. why?

milage- holy crap....... i know they say not to put a lot of trust into the gauge but i went from 3/4 full to 1/4 and only got 50 miles.... i will test the o2 sensor soon but what else? timing? the bad idle? i put a new airfilter and accel wires. i dont really smell gas but i dont know

now i have about $2k in this and it just keeps getting worse.... would i even be able to sell it like this for 2k? with 130,000 miles on it? any help will be greatly APPRICIATED! btw this is my first turbo and my first stick shift and MY first car. now i dont even know what to do cept sell it to the shop for maybe 500 and forget i was stupid enough to buy a car that was broken and think i would have a good deal.

could i take any legal action on the guy for saying the tranny was good since it was only verbal?

i wish i wouldnt have bought this car :thumbdown

Unfortunately these cars are very labor intensive to own and maintain. If you would like to turn some wrenches the resources are out there on what and how to do. If not, another make and or model might be more reliable for you. :dsm:

Change the tranny fluid out and put in some Pennzoil synchromesh fluid. Pressure test for intake leaks (that could cause grossly bad milage and a bad idle.) Accel wires aren't the best. The best (IMO for the money)are the NGK wires. www.machv.com has them as well as a few other vendors. Get some NGK BPR6ES plugs and gap them to .028. You should probably change out the transfer case and rear differential oil while you're at it. It sounds like the car is way behind on maintainance. Check the master cylinder for leaks. Where does the clutch engage at relative to the floor? If it's close to the floor adjusting the clutch actuator could solve your shifting issues. This is all stuff you can do yourself for less than $150 and it should make a lot of difference. Let us know how it comes out.

yea i should have known it was behind in maintainance. who lets a timing belt go for 130k? he said the oil was changed every 2500, but im sure thats crap too. and i did want like a 93 mustang lx but i figured id get this running for like 1500. i called around to see how much a head rebuild would be and a shop wanted 500 just to rebuild the head. but then i found a place called PIK that would get it running for 500, and they specialize in dsm and imports.

anyways i have to order the penz synchromesh. why doesn't like any of my local auto stores care pennzoil? i work at a grocery store and they have penz oil and atf? and im guessing the synchro is trashed so if i just used some valvoline 75w90 would it be any better? what about valv synthetic which is $10 a quart?

i figured linkage on the the third gear pop out so i go to check it out and adjust it..... surprise, surpise i cant! the side to side has the adjust but the up and down is just a rod until its cable. the stick also doesnt hit the rubber stopper in third but the cable is pulled all the way. 1st and 5th dont have any problems tho. but how could i even adjust it? makes me wonder wtf was up with the tranny that they replaced the cable?

even tho the head was just rebuilt i think ill run a compression test and post the results

im also missing a nut on the exhaust manifold- but it doesnt seem to leak

IDLE- now heres what i dont understand. does the fiav just control the isc or is it a seperate airsource? cuz i have to crank my biss way out to idle cold but then turn it in once its warm. can the 2 coils be interchanged in the isc or are they different? theyre both supose to be 30ohms so theyre the same right? anyone have any spare coils or know of a good source?

can i check for vaccum leaks without a pump? is there a vfaq or similar about it?

i cant imagine how sweet this car must be in good running order :)

and i know im going off the gauge but id only be getting approx 100 miles a tank.... TERRIBLE!!!!!!! but i dont see a puddle under the car LOL. if its leaky injectors - one of mine twist very easily what happens to the fuel? does it leak out and burn or what? what lines or hoses should i check? i heard even if its running as rich as possible it cant be that bad? this car is seriously gonna make me  WTF?! LOL

With a "boost" leak it can be that bad. It would be running rich all the time if it was a bad one. I doubt you're leaking fuel anywhere. You'd smell it any time you got out of the car.

I would put the penzoil syncromesh in it. You can find it at Autozone if you have one in your area. I would also check engine and tranny mounts. I have seen bad mounts pull the tranny out of gear. Next is to bleed the clutch and adjust the linkage rod under the dash.

For the fuel problem, check the coolant temp sensor. That can really screw with your idle, hot or cold, and can also make mileage go to sh(t. Just replace the o2 sensor with oem. If you buy the cheaper bosch, get 2 or 3 because that is how many you will go through this year.

yea i think theres an autozone here :) i know its prob easy but how do i test for boost leaks? do i just pump air into the intake and listen for whistles? and i know the isc is toasted. 1 of 4 sets were good and if i take it out it just clicks and doesnt move. thanks for the help and the lack of "youre a stupid idiot" comments LOL

small update-

isc- although 2 pairs are 50ohms it works now.....

ips!- this piece of crap needed adjustment since it was almsot never being pushed

timing- was idling at 15*+ btdc.... adjusted base from 13 to 6 or 7 or so and its different LOL

now my "piece" starts and idles pretty good even when cold :thumb: hopefully the milage will perk up

tranny- today im gonna get some new fulid, just cheap valvoline tho i doubt itll help much but i doubt full synthetic would help much with 3rd gear

now i get a nice deep tone i thought these were suppose to sound like! :) not some little indy car or something LOL

i still need to take it for a drive tho need some time...
