My car will not turn over, i thought the battery was dead, so i bought a new one, it cranks quicker then the other batt, but still isnt kicking over, it just keeps making that noise like as if the motor wants to turn over. worst thing is that i have to travel 2 states away tomarrow. any help would be greatly appreciated

check your basics... check spark, then fuel..
pull a plug ground on valve cover or exhaust, verify you have spark.. pull fuel return line verify you have fuel... go from there
 
Are you saying that the starter turns the motor over, but the cylinders will not fire? If so, pull out any spark plug & see if the plug is wet with unburned fuel,(no spark). or is the plug dry(no fuel).
 
yes, the belts are moving, but i get no turn over. also, when i pulled into my driveway before the car wouldnt turn over i had revved my engine a bit and then the car died. i replaced the battery last night and its cranking hella quicker then theolder battery in there. ive yet to check the plugs, but would me revving the engine be a reason why it died?
 
Try these then come back....

1)Take a plug wire out, and put a spark plug in it, and then put it near metal and turn the car over?....spark or no? If not then it may be the coil pack, ecu, power transistor.

2)If that works, take the fuel line off of the fuel rail (from the filter to rail), then put a small bowl of something over the end of the line...use a loger to energize the fuel pump, or turn the car over, see is fuel comes out.

3)Check the grounds, and battery connections for loose, corrotion, broke lines.

4)If all of this is good, check the connector under the Thermostat, and make sure the temp connector is connected. If its not the injectors won't open = no start

5)Then if this is all fine, take the ecu out and smell it, if it smells like fish its gone, or open it to check for leaks.

6)Reach around and make sure the starter power, and ground are still hooked up, if they are take the starter out and test it with a battery. Could be the starter soleniod.

7)Check for huge vaccum leaks

8)Make sure the battery is even charged enough

9)Your plugs are probably fouled because of all the fuel you have dumped in turning it over, so change those, or clean them (if the car gets fuel)

10)Make sure all 4 spark plug wires are getting spark

11)CAm angle sensor could be off

12)Timing could be way off

13)Timing belt skipped a tooth or more

14)Check all the major connectors are still connected

15)Check fuse's and relays for blown ones

I can't think of anymore right now..
 
i tried all of those.
new wires, new plugs, new fuel filter, added more gas to be safe, new air filter, new battery. still nothing, and i have to charge my new battery now becuase it has died from being used so much while trying to figure out what is up my my engine. is it at all possible that my MAF is damaged? and thats why it isnt starting? any ideas would be excellent, i dont have the $ for some mechanic to tell me that its broken then charge me to death with something i could have fixed myself knowing what it is. also is it possible it is leaking injectors, im going though my haynes manual at the troubleshooting for an " engine that rotates but dosent start"

1. fuel tank empty
2. battery discharged
3.batt connections loose
4. leaking fuel injectors, faulty fuel pump, pressure regulator
5. fuel not reaching fuel rail
6.igniton compenets damp or damaged.

ok, plugs, wires, all new, had a friend come over and he said im not getting spark from any plugs. and that it is possible that the coil pack is gone. no spark to the plugs and no acrhing from the wires to the coil pack. what do you guys think, mitsu dealer want;s 180 for the new coil pack.
 
You are better to isolate the failing component & then buy exactly what you need.
You have no spark at the plugs,
1- check the ignition fuse
2- check the coils,(chilton p. 2-5) with an ohmmeter to determine if they are good.
 
timing ok, belt is snug. coil getting no spark { i have a haynes manual} and how/where do i check the igniton fuse? i have a 2g, i dont remember seeing one under there. would the timing have anything to do with the coil pack and the spark?
 
If you have no spark at the coil its either the ecu, coil pack, or the power tranistor below the coil pack on the engine head. Its a long connector with a clip on it. Make sure thats plugged in, then check to make sure your ecu smells or if its leaking. Then try swapping in a working coil pack.

Try that and come back.
 
im retarded, is the ecu the same box that i tapped into for my air fuel gauge? or it something diffrent. and how would you tell if the power transistors are gone bad?
 
hey guys,
i fixed it, it was the power transistor plug, it vibrated loose, i pulled it off pushed it down hard started the first time. I read alot of these posts like mine, maybe the power transistor plug check should be added to a v faq? anyways, thanks for all the help, glad to have her running again. DSM's Rule! :dsm:
