High Idle

Check to see if your throttle cable is stuck open, check the TPS, and check your timing.
Mine did this when I installed the UICP, because of the 90 cruise box I had to run the pipe between the throttle cable and the cruise cable, otherwise it would press down on the throttle cable enough to hold the throttle plate open a little.
Could I use the word throttle any more in this post...

Something you could check would be the fast idle air valve. It's located in the throttle body. It works by decreasing idle speed with the increase of water temperature. They have a spring insde and I have seen this give trouble.

I have a FMIC, the piping squeezes on the throttle cables, I have a feeling this is the problem...I let you know. Thanks

Hondakiller,

I see you're from Eau Claire too. My problem is the opposite. Rough to no idle after getting my timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idler pulley changed. Idle bounces from 750 to as low as 400 and then it dies sometimes. Everything was fine before the timing belt change. Granted, I'm not the most techy guy in the world, so I've pretty much given up.

You guys have any thoughts or suggestions?

89beretta,

Check to make sure your timing is adjusted properly. I had the same problem as you, and found that my timing was not adjusted correctly. By using a timing light, you could manually adjust the timing with the Cam Angle Sensor. That fixed my problem right up. The car was surging and bucking and trying to die, and the sucker smoothed out as I turned the CAS and then it idled dead at 750.

Thanks for high-jaking my thread a*shole....
j/k :D

Anywho, make sure that you ground the idle terminal. Other wise you ECU will keep trying to compensate for the change. Its located behind the battery next to the firewall. It should have a plug on it.... I'll see if I can find a pic.

And it looks like the cable was the problem, I can left the gas pedal up with my foot and the idle dropped to below 500 rpms. I adjusted it and it sat right at 750 rpms. Every time I push the gas, I have to pull it back up with my foot to get the idle to sit right. That will be a temporary fix until I get the time to readjust the cable routing.

THANKS!!!!! :thumb:

I had a high idle problem on my car. The problem was the temp sensor harness was dirty and would only connect sometimes. When I reconnected it the CEL came on so I replaced the sensor problem solved. I was also running pig rich cause of it and my engine would flood at shutdown and my plugs turned black but were not wet (that would be oil not gas)
