Hello,
I have a '92 laser AWD.
Yesterday I drove into my driveway and it started to make a thump noise. It sounded like a belt or something.
Then the noise got worse then the sound went away and the engine stalled. I checked the timing belt and it is fine. (new just 1.5 year ago).
I tried to turn it over, and the starter is engaging, but the timing belt and cams are not moving at all.

Could this be the crankshaft pulley?

And have I ruined the engine by turning it over.

(forgive me for lack of knowledge).

Thanks-

Sounds like your timing belt broke. If the valves didnt get bent when it broke they did when you turned it over after it stalled. You are going to have to pull the head off and have it rebuilt...sorry man.

Dont worry I know how it feels. :(

one thing,
I forgot to mention that after a few cranking turns, the timing belt turned over and the engine fired. now it just turns over and over with the engine firing once in a while.
Now, since the timing belt made a few rounds and my dad was watching and he said that he saw nothing wrong with the timing belt, could it still be the crankshaft pulley? Or could it be another belt inside.?

remember, the timing belt had only 15,000 since change.
The belt looks fine. And after I turned the motor over a few times it looks fine.
Now the problem is that the starter sounds like it is engaging, but the engine only turns over once in a while.

My question is, if it is the crankshaft pulley, can I just replace and line it up on shaft or did it do damage to engine??

Thanks-

there is a very good chance you have bent some valves but it cant hurt it any more if you fix the problem and try and turn it over you might get lucky my suggestion would be to pull off the front cover and check everything out, the only thing i can think off is possibly you have some faulty pulley or tensioner in there that may have caused the belt to slip and i dont see how but i guess there is a possibility you could have sheared the key on the crank gear

I am going to take the cover off soon.
The thing that I am worried about is that when my friend who owns a garage, when he changed the timing belt, he said that there was work he had to do with the tensioner. He did the work himself and had to weld something in place. Now I am curious what he ws talking about.
I will soon see.

Thanks guys for your help. I hope that I can somehow save something.

DOH!!!

I took my valve cover off and looked on the topend.
The valves look fine.
I think that something happened to the tensioner and my timing belt slipped 2 clogs.
And something may have broke my key in the crank gear also.

who knows.
All I know is yesterday the timing belt was a little loose and now it is tight again. Go figure.

I will take the side cover off this coming week and I will post my results.

Thanks guys!

It's not very easy to tell if the heads of the vaves are bent if you only look under the valve cover. Do either a compression test on all 4 cylinders, or a leak down test. This will tell if you have bent valves.

Steve. :)
