Is there anyone an the area that knows how to put on and set the timing belt right?
I'm in Chester. Engine is out of car on stand.

It's not to awfully hard. here's a video.

And a pic of the timing marks on crank and balance shaft

Put cylinder 1 at TDC(cylinder closest to timing belt). make sure you balance shaft lines up to its mark. You might have to crank it over a few times to get it in right spot.

Make sure your crank is lined up again also. then set cam marks facing each other level with valve cover.

Then start from top and put your belt on. You can crank it over with the belt on several more revolutions too see if all the marks continue to line up every so many turns( cant remember exactly how many turns but you should see for yourself).

I'm fairly close and know how.

Ok, Imma give it a shot one more time and if I can't get it, I'll try to connect with you.

:thumb: Thanks, Imma try this and see if I can get it.

Brian,I didn't knew ,that you know how to do a timing belt...... :shhh:

Marius, there's probably a lot of stuff I know how to do that you don't know LOL

I've done it my fair share of times. Actually doing one for a local guy in a few weekends.

Sounds good. Do you have the proper tools to make it easier? If not, that's one purchase you definitely should make - or make friends with someone who has them. I'll be back near you next weekend and have the tools at home. Let me know if you don't have them and need my help so I can stop and pick them up.

Just watched that video - I'm not the biggest fan as they don't check any spacing in regards to the tensioner gap. Please make sure to always follow the FSM along with the VFAQ article that has all the details.

depending on generation 1st or 2nd the tensioner pully needs to be rotaded clockwise for 1st gens counterclockwise for 2nd gens if you dont the belt wont tension properly. It's the pully with two holes in it. can use bent needle nose to rotate.

Thanks for all the pointers, and the video. I think I got it set right. I just used wrenches and zipties for the cams. The tensioner pulley was never loosened, just the hydraulic tensioner was removed and the belt was slipped off the motor I bought. I had a little trouble with the crank marks though. When I first set it, I started to rotate the motor to check, but it would stop.

I found out there were different marks for a 93-94 1g 7-bolt (which I'm putting in) than the 6 bolt. After I fixed it and checked all my marks, it rotated smoothly and looks like all the marks are lining back up as they should.

Imma post pics when I get a chance to see what you guys think.:hellyeah:

I'm interested in some help here as well. Started breaking Down the motor yesterday and I'm going to end up taking the other belts and tensioners off to make it easier, but I will def. Need help putting the new one on, but won't be for a week or two at minimum, depending on how bad the head and block are. Shoot me a pm if you'd be willing to help!
