Found this on another site, the guy said he got the info from the CATZ site. Don't know how true it is.

After Aug 15, 2003 aftermarket HID conversion kits will become illegal to sell in the US...here is a letter from Catz USA
CATZ HID DEALER:

We want you to be informed of a Government investigation into the legality of ALL after market HID conversion kits. NHTSA (www.nhtsa.gov) is asking Importers, Suppliers and Manufacturers (CATZ is a Manufacturer and Supplier) to help them determine if the kits meet all kinds of regulations, standards, codes etc. and we are helping in this phase of the investigation.

If the kits are deemed non compliant, there will most likely be a recall. The recall will take place somewhere after August 15th 2003. Only Dealers would be required to return merchandise to us. End user customers will not be notified. If the kits are found to be non-compliant, it will be illegal to sell them to end user customers after August 15th 2003.

If the kits are found to be compliant, business as usual will commence.

We have been given the GO AHEAD by a representative in Washington to continue to sell the products between now and August 15th, and we are doing so, but with advisement to the Dealers.

Please call if you have questions.

...most dealers will be having really good prices, while supplies last, so if you were planning on going HID you might want to hurry up and purchase. Sorry for the book, just giving you guys a heads up, so that if you were planning on doing it, you would have the chance.

not sure if this applies to me as I bought mine over a year ago. I believe the balast in mine are Hella. I have the Hella H4 housing upgrade too.

Other than that even if they are outlawed I'm sure, just like drugs, one will still be able to find them. And with them being so common on cars now a days a good percentage of law enforcement is not gonna know if the car came from the factory with them or not.

Good, I am glad they are doing this. Improperly installed units blind other drivers. It's too bad even if you install them correctly they are still illegal.

And with them being so common on cars now a days a good percentage of law enforcement is not gonna know if the car came from the factory with them or not.

Um, try again. Pretty much every car older than 2000 didn't come with them. Only the luxury models. It will be pretty obvious when a riced out civic drives down the road with bright white lights, that they have illegal HIDs.

if a car isn't ricey and its a newer model they arent gonan knwo sh it. Besides that I really don't care anyway. I will have hids one way or another, stock lighting on 1g's sucks

Next time I'm in NJ I will eb sure to blind you with my lights

Do a little research on the subject. You can tell a non OEM setup from a hacked one a mile away.

Do things the right way or not at all.

FYI, that is how all HID retrofit systems look without the projector assembly. You could easily take the flip up assy. and put the projector housing in.

where can I get a projector housing for my flip ups without having to do some major work?

and the RSX came to mind because of how the housing is sculpted, I have seen several of them out here with hid kits and they look great, at least froma stance and a distance, I don't know how they look from the driver seat.

I didn't mean all cops won't know, there are some that will and some that will not be aware of it or question it cause they are unsure but this isn't the topic anyways. HID lighting is the future and is far superior to old conventional bulbs so sooner or later 95% of vehicles will have them

Opinions differ once you see the outcome back to back don't they.

I would suggest going with a "lazy eye" setup. That way you won't have to go from a huge headlight to an itsy bitsy projector. You first task is to find a sealed version of the projector housing.. I have a feeling that will be the hardest part. Once you do that it will be a simple task of fiberglassing another housing around the sealed projector setup. Then all you would have to do is the lazy eye. I don't know how the standard flip ups know when they are up all the way. On my firebird it is resistance based. A simple longer bolt in the up and down adjuster will trick the system into thinking it is up like stock.

On the other hand it could be easier for you than me. For the life of me I can't find a set of headlight for my car that are under $200 EACH.

I don't know if this is a repost, if so delete it, but according to this site www.liteswap.com sooo A little bit of background. NHSTA/DOT has been trying to introduce new laws to regulate the sale of HID... well.. they just decided to BAN ALL HID KITS. They do not have a set regulation because HID does not use a filament.. therefore, no matter how accurate the HID kit is, it fails because of that ONE requirement. Well, DUH, HID has no filament, so it automatically fails.

5,000 dollars perday to each vendor who sells them after this date.

Now, I really don't believe this because for one how can this have been going on without ANYBODY knowing about it(at least I haven't heard it), and second what about ALLLLLLLL the vehicles that have OEM HID kits? I don't think that this site is legit and since they claim to be "liquidating" their inventory..their prices are not good at all. I can go to pep boys and get the same thing. Anyways...

bull shit. hid is the best source of light ever created for cars. its way safer and i think mercedes, bmw, audi, porsche, and all those high name cars will have a say in it. and even if it does happen then venwill have stickers that say "off road use only" like they do with everything else illegal.

I didn't read the article but maybe they just mean aftermarket HID conversion kits and not OEM HID that already come on the car.

Here is the story in brief (taken from a reputable HID vendor):

"It is our regret to inform you that as of August 15th, 2003, the sale and importation of aftermarket HID retrofit systems will most likely be altered significantly. The NHTSA/DOT has been trying to introduce new laws to regulate the sale of HID retrofit kits. Their guidelines on determining the legality of HID kits are antiquated at best and include filament locations. Because HID technology does not utilize a filament, they will always fail. No matter how high quality the kit is, they deem them as unfit for retrofit.

These regulatory changes and/or enforcement will effect ALL HID kit sales. On or about 8/15/2003, HID kits as you know it will never be sold again unless new laws or changes to existing regulations are made. I'm sure there are all types of legal issues here, but Liteswap.com will have to comply with whatever NHTSA decides. To our knowledge, after 8/15/03, there will be a possible $5,000 fine PER DAY for manufacturers selling HID kits."

Are they serious about this?????

Damn, they should concentrate their efforts on more pressing matters like the use of cel phones while driving OR those who have tons of TV screens on their cars that are capable of receiving broadcast.

HIDs actually make it safer for drivers by making the road ahead more visible. They only need to be aimed right.

i was driving along an unfimialr road tonight and lost control and spun sideways into an intersection because i couldnt see where the hell i was going, i wasnt even speeding and i blame it on shitty headlights.... HID and xenon (real xenon not the shitty APC crap) are definately safer than regular halogen....
