Well guys, I've run into my first snag. The other night in a King of the Street bracket match, my car sounded like it started knocking at the top of 3rd gear. I jetted up, but haven't retarded the timing any, just used 107 octane gas. It doesn't sound like fuel cut, because the knock would be at the top of each gear, not just 3rd. Any ideas????
I don't have all the tuning equipment I need, because I've only had the car for 1 month. But the spray gave me a 1.912 60', 8.976 1/8, and finished with a 14.243@81mph. You can tell by the mph that I was on the brakes. Looked to be a 13.8 or so. The 65 shot pulls awesome out of the hole.

You are gonna have to give us more than that. Wet kit? Dry kit? Other supporting mods? Have you advanced timing at all? Give me some more info and I'll see how I can help.

Regards,

where is 22* adv. coming from? aslan meant base timing - which should be 5* BTDC
i thought you didn't have a logger?

marshall

No datalogger. But when I bought the car timing advance was 22* and base was 5*. I haven't checked it myself. Still trying to get a good price on a datalogger.

A 65 shot with no fuel mods??? Uhmmm that's like trying to kill your engine. Knocking isn't good but it's hard to tell what it is. It dosen't do it at low rpms?

You are playing with fire. Doesn't the ZEX kit rely on fuel pressure increase to supply the extra fuel? You don't really have to answer, I already know. You should not be doing this on a stock fuel system. The knocking you are hearing the ticking of bomb.

Actually, I think I found the problem. I recently switched to Royal Purple synthetic oils. That is some of the thinnest stuff I've ever seen. I think the oil runs sothin, that when the engine is very hot, like it was, a couple of pistons were knocking from lack of lube, not fuel. If it was fuel, then it would knock at the top of all the gears, not just 3rd. Keep the input coming. Thanx.

not trying to sound like an ass, but i think nano stated your problem pretty clearly -

"A 65 shot with no fuel mods??? Uhmmm that's like trying to kill your engine. "

looking at my recent logs, i get lots more knock in third than i do in 1st and 2nd...

marshall

But how can that be considered a fuel problem, when it doesn't knock in any other gear, and hasn't done it since I've been to the track that night. At the track they were having a constant run tourney, and I made 4 passes before I heard the first knock. I then shut it down and took it to the house. No prblems since.

i'm saying i have more knock in third due to how i have my car tuned right now. i have rarely seen equal knock in all the gears, it just doesn't happen.

aight. thanx for the info. U are going by the knock sensor right? I'm talking about knocking u can hear. Almost like the gear ran out and I was pegging the rev limiter. Tha could have been it I guess, but I thikn I was pulling 6 grand and not topping the gear yet.

Well its very possible to get knock in 3rd only, but I doubt if you were. If you could hear it and it sounded like the rev limiter, you were probably knocking really really bad. Ticking time bomb. While I was tuning my car sometimes I would get 0-1 counts knock in 2nd and then go up to like 4-9 in 3rd...I think its because 3rd has more gear, your in it longer and the heat usually goes up the longer you have it pegged for. So when I would floor it in 2nd the egt's wouldnt go as high as 3rd (not enough time), but in 3rd it was in longer so the temperature rises, which plays a part in knock/ping. I would talk to some of these knowledgable guys in here (Mr. Aslan...), and be very careful what you do with your nitrous, especially considering you have no logging material or fuel mods...;)

I'm workingon getting more upgrades. The fuel pump should be in shortly, and I'm trying to find a datalogger for a good price, but still no luck. If anyone has any leads on a good dea for a datalogger, please let me know. Thanx.

Why dont you consider a pocketlogger? Much cheaper, unless you already have a laptop that you want to use and lug around... I got my whole setup for like 210 or something, I dont really remember...

The pocket logger doesn't fit my year modle. I read the spec on the web site, and it doesn't say anything about 2g Eclipses, only 1g. Thanx for the idea, but I u know they will work I need proof before sinking money into it. Thanx.

nvmd, I found a version that will work with my car. The OBDII PocketLogger should work for 2g DSMs. It says that you cannot change any parameters in your engine. I'm looking for a piece of equipment that I can adjust my timing with. Any ideas.

Apex-i ITC? or maby you should just let the computer do its own job, wich is decide what timing it should run, for you exact state of tune. If your have the right amount of fuel, the right octane, and your car tuned right your computer will give you all the timing you need. Buy the datalogger, thats what you need. Then, if your car is knocking try giving it some more fuel, or some higher octane?
