Anyone have instructions for replacing the fuel filter on a 2g turbo? I looked at VFAQ but didn't find anything.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Where is the fuel filter located? Any tips to get it out? Etc.

Thanks

I changed mine last weekend. YOu will need a new fuel filter and two new copper crush rings which may or may not come with the filter. Mine did not. First depressurize the fuel system by disconnecting the fuel pump power supply, found underneath the back seat on the passenger side. Start the car and run it till it dies from fuel starvation. Remove the battery, battery mounting brackets, and the charcoal canister underneath the brackets. Make sure to label the hoses you disconnect. You will need a very short 12mm wrench to remove some of the bolts. I just trimmed my extra 12mm wrench down with an angle grinder. Now you can access the fuel filter. Use will need a 19mm wrench, a 19mm line wrench, and a 14mm line wrench. Use the regular 19mm wrench as a backup, and remove the upper and lower connections with the line wrenches. Any further questions just ask.

Will fuel spew everywhere when I disconnect the two lines?

How much did everything cost? How difficult was it to get the fuel filter out?

THanks!

haha...yeh...it looks like an oil filter with to bolts and holes both ends. They are easy to replace but hard to get to...once you have access to it, its a sinch.

This is actually one of the worst things you will ever do to fix your car. I had a hell of a time getting it out even with the head off.

What I found was that taking out the battery, the battery bracket, and charcoal canister gave me enough room to get a little bit of leverage. The other thing I've found works is to get some big vice grips and use those to grab the body of the filter.

Good luck.

I highly recommend to use flarenut wrenches when losening up the fuel lines, oh yeah a set of gloves are handy too when those damn nuts break loose!

Agreed, you will need flarenut wrenches. The problem is that there really isn't enough room to maneuver in there with two wrenches. What I ended up doing, the two times of done this, was using the vice grips to hold the body of the filter and bracing those against something so I could use a single flarenut wrench to get the bottom fitting loose.

The top fitting is another story, as it's easier to reach but in both cases I removed it, the damn thing was stuck on there so tight it took dynamite to get it loose.

Ya know, this is the one job I'd actually take it back to the dealer for.

I used a 1/2" impact driver to break the top nut loose...I had removed the fuel filter with the top fuel line disconnected at the fuel rail so it was out of the car and easy to work with. It still was one of the most difficult things I've done on a car in a long time...right on par with changing the starter in a V8 Mustang II.

That's what most of the depressurizing stops. You'll still get a little spilled, so smoking through the job is probably bad.

Maybe ten bucks.

It's no more difficult than sneaking into a bank after it's closed by sneaking up the toilet drain. With a grating welded over the toilet.

For all you Talon guys.

When you go to napa or wherever to buy the fuel filter. Tell them you have an Eclipse GSX or whatever model you have. Dont tell them talon, no matter what you will get the NT fuel filter. They have the same filter listed in their books for Turbo and NT. They ARE different.

Most accurate description of changing the fuel filter that I've ever heard! :thumb:

Hmm, some real mixed opinions here. Some saying it's just another job and some saying it's so bad they took it to a dealer.

This is what I got from this thread, let me know if these steps are incorrect:

1. Disconnect the fuel pump by removing the driver backseat cushion.
2. Start car and let it run till it dies of fuel starvation.
3. Remove the battery and tray.
4. The fuel filter will be right there and I just need the right tools to get the wire bolts loose.
5. Once the fuel lines are off, remove the fuel filter and replace it with a new one.

6. Installation is reverse of removal.

This doesn't sound that complex? Am I missing something very important?

Thanks much guys! This thread will be of great help to future DSMTuners looking for info on replacing their fuel filters.

Thats it, but the bolts are real bitches to get off.

#4 in your procedure is incorrect. The filter is not "right there". Go out to your car right now and peek down there; imagine getting two flarenut wrenches into that space, underneath the filter, and removing some very tight fittings.

It's so much easier on firt gens!! The procedure seems easy but the thing is that the fuel lines (not wires!) are very tight and you have minimal leverage because everything seems to be in the way when you try to fit the wrenches. You'll cuss a lot I promise you that!!

Old thread, but figured I would share the best way I figured out how to do it. Hopefully this helps someone in the future. The first two pics are how to break it loose, and the last one is how to loosen it after you remove the 10mm that keeps the filter from rotating.

Be careful you don't round the nuts on the fuel line itself, it's such soft pot metal - it's almost inevitable. Treat it like it's rusted together - spray it with WD40, tap it and let it sit overnight. Even then I finally ended up crushing it with a locking pliers just to loosen it. You are warned.

To chime in here too, you can also adapt that stock inverted flare to say a -6AN so you rid yourself of ever messing with the soft fitting again. With that being said.....you would be committing to swapping to a different filter or doing a double adaptation to get back to the stock element.....which would be quite janky.
