I know this is similar to other post bit the others don't necessarily answer. I bought this eclipse and he said he got it tuned because when I test drove it it sputtered bad. It doesn't as much as it did when I tested it. There is this black box with 4 dials and he told me to adjust the fails when it starts to sputter according to temp. change. I did that but sputters still depending on temp so far. It puffs black smoke when it sputters for awhile and is really affecting my mpg. I have a picture of the box. I forget what its called. Please help

Looks like a maf translator and if so I'm guessing it has a gm blow through maf of sorts. Google dsm maf translator tuning and that should help. If you have dsmlink on your car then it need to be set for stock. If its being used to compensate for larger injectors then google it. I'd recomend scrap trying to tune with it and get dsmlink. Since this is yiur first post I'll save you some hassle with these guys on here and let you know its lot easier to get help when you have known mods in your signature.

OK thanks I talked to the guy that tuned it for the guy I bought it from. He said that it needs a map sensor and converted to speed density and retuned. I appreciate your help greatly.

Ughhhh, it doesn't need speed density and a map! If you were running dsmlink then yes if you decide the speed density route is what you want.

Back when I was a younger, my talon ran the same box.
The black smoke and sputter means the car at the certain time is pouring fuel into the cylinder! Now obviously you need to verify that with a fueltrim graph, or air/fuel gauge.

Word of advice..... Get rid of it, get dsmlink and never ever look back. It's ok somewhat to learn what tuning is. However, that pos is why I had to spend more money than needed as in rebuilding because its not trust worthy!

Get ahold of someone that knows how to adjust that device, because apparently the prior owner or his "tuner" friend didn't either. Take my advise before you stranded because you melted a piston or burn a valve!

Also, if you go to the MAF translator website that makes that tuner, you can print off a free manual that tells you which dial does what, how to adjust it to you mods such as injector size, you can adjust Base idle, wot,
