Cam caps direction

Ok so I have a 1990 Tsi. I just rebuilt the head and the caps got jumbled. My cam caps don't have I or E etched on them but R and L. My question is, is L intake and R exhaust?

What does the cam cap that the cas slides into say?? if it has a matching letter that those would obviously be on the intake side..

Just checked three of my cylinder heads, but all have I or E markings. Typically, left or right on an engine is based on as if you were sitting on the engine facing the timing belt (front) end. I would confirm this with your parts as the first response indicated.

Also, if you put the cams in with the caps tightened down (no rockers...) you should be able to turn the cams with little effort as another verification.

I have one sitting here and yes if you were sitting on the head facing the timing gears then left is your left and right is your right.

Did you not take a picture before you removed them? And yeah they have a lot of different numbers going on there ,

I did that's the order in which there were, according to old pics. But just didn't make any sense. I have two other heads and they are clear as day and in order based on common sense.

^ I ended up going with what allowed for free spinning cams.
As in i changed the order if it was to tight, to make it loose.

Theyre marked and the fsm tells you which way they go. Am I missing something here?
