Hey everyone I'm not a DSM guy, I'm actually a TD (Turbo Dodge) guy but I know you guys have a lot of knowledge in turbos so I figured I'd ask y'all some questions about them. First of all, I am rebuilding my engine and I'm looking for a new turbo, I am considering the Garrett GTX3582R, the Holset HX35, and the Holset HX40 but none are exactly what I want. I have a 2.5L 8V I4 and I'm looking to get 350- 400whp. I'm looking for a twin scroll, water cooled, external wastegate turbo for a decent price that can provide me with the kind of power I want. Any suggestions for turbos or any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have an hx40 and it's got alot of kick! I made 392 awhp on 22psi on 91 octane pump gas spool would be NUTS fast on your truck. Mine is not water cooled but it is externally gated. I'm running 28psi now on 94 octane and it hauls, it's a 9 second capable turbo on a car, and is rated for 4-600hp on a truck if i recall. But i am not running the stock holset turbine housing which is twin scroll. The hx40 is cheap and even found on peter built semis. I think it would be a great turbo for you, especially since holset is made for dodge.

HOLSETs are not water cooled, they are oil cooled. I would go with the hx40 if I were you. There is a holset sticky in the turbo tech forums with all the info we have on them. Make sure to watch for fakes.

A ton of people on this forum have been running non water cooled holsets for a long time with no problem. Just get the oil pressure right and get just an oil one and save yourself the hassel from running the coolant lines. Good luck! :thumb:

Look up my brother on facebook. He is the turbo dodge guy you need to talk and has your car as well. Its ForceFedMopar , he is also on the turbo dodge forums. Tell him his brother jacob off sent you and that met me on this forum.

Thanks. But it's funny you should mention the coolant lines... I currently have an oil/water cooled garrett on my car, so they're already run and I wanted to save myself the hassel of having to get rid of them. haha

@MJ hey thanks man. I actually see him A LOT on the forums over at turbo dodge and turbo mopar.

no problem. He'd be the dude to ask. And yeah he is on his forum about as much as I am on this one. Lol

I think you could get a garret equivalent like maybe a 60 & keep the coolant lines

Apparently you haven't looked hard enough. ;)

More than that, you need to have an idea of what RPM you'd like to see full boost, what RPM will be considered your redline, and how much boost you'd like to run in order to reach your horsepower goal. In other words, I don't want to recommend a turbo that reaches full boost at 4500 if your redline is 6000.

From the sounds of it you're building a Chrysler 2.5 head-gasket eater....a buddy of mine attempted to build one of those in a Chrysler minivan about 10 years ago and couldn't keep a head gasket in it past 18psi. In fact, he destroyed the head gasket so badly during a pull once that it sprayed coolant in the cylinders and ruined the engine.

He spoke to some Chrysler guys who claimed building a 2.2 instead of a 2.5 would ease the head gasket problem by having more of a squish band between the cylinders and while it was indeed better, it still had chronic head gasket problems and drove him to abandon the project altogether.

That in mind, you may want to look into something large enough that you can reach your horsepower goal while keeping boost levels fairly low in order to protect the engine.

Sounds like your buddy should give up working on the cars. Neither My brother nor his friends have had issues like that with either engine. At 20psi and more. My brother has been doing it in his lebaron for over a year now. Running plenty of times at the drag strip as well.
So he was doing something wrong regardless of how many times he tried.

@JUS Thanks for the photographic evidence that they exist LOL. My redline is 5500 and I'd feel comfortable running up to 28lbs. Your friend was probably using cheap gaskets, Mopar performance sells a good one cheap.

@MJ yeah I agree, I see guys on turbo mopar running 30lbs all day with no problems on this motor and even up to 45lbs at a track day. Also your brother recommended a HX35 and said oil cooled only shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds like we think alike. If removing your coolant lines doesn't bother you, the HX35 oil cooled only would be great for your goal.

That's an awfully low redline for a 2.5L 4-cylinder using one of the turbos you listed above. I'd actually look in a GT3076R/HX35/S256 for your modest horswpower goal....any of those would outspool a 35R/HX40 and can still make airflow in the upper 40 or lower 50 lb/min range at 28-30psi which is plenty to make a comfortable 350-400hp.

I honestly don't recall....he wasn't a cheap guy so if there was a good gasket to be had in that era (2001-2003ish), he would've used it I'm sure.

Hey thats cool, never seen or heard of one. :hmm: Sorry for the bad info LOL. You just changed my mind on the hx40 I was about to buy. Where are these supplied from?

Okay, since ForceFedMopar recommended the HX35 on turbo mopar and you guys are saying it too, I have one question. Does Holset offer this turbo in water and oil cooled? Not that I couldn't run it just on oil, but I would prefer to run on both.

No, I was looking for water cooled because I already have coolant lines and because I heard they last longer
