Everything so far was going great for my summer project until just yesterday this happened. It has been annoying the living heck out of me and I don't know what the issue might be .

On my way to work yesterday, I got in my and started it. The second I pushed in my clutch, I heard a deep whining sound. I let go of the clutch, whining sound goes away. From what I've looked up, it seems to be the opposite of a throwout bearing problem (which causes a whining noise when releasing the clutch pedal,; at least from what I've read). I thought it might have been related to the flywheel or something but I honestly have no clue.l When I drive my car and shift at a higher rpm (around 2.5-3k) the whining noise is basically sped up so it sounds a bit higher in pitch then in idle. So deep whining sound when clutch pushed in in idle and higher pitched whining sound when clutch pushed at higher rpm.

This is annoying the heck out of me and I really hope this doesn't mean that I have to drop my tranny. I have a feeling that is most likely what's going to have to happen though.

Any thoughts or idea on what the issue may be??

Thank you for the reply man. So how much do you think it's gonna cost for me to fix this? Including labour?

Maybe I should take a video of it just so you get an idea of the sound it makes

About $30 for the bearing if you do it yourself (but have to pull tranny). Call a transmission shop for their price (guessing maybe $500-$900). Better yet take it to them for a free estimate and then get their opinion as to what the noise is along with their estimate.

Lol will do but now I'm thinking to just save for a rebuilt tranny and slap that on when it's time. Or just don't know if I'd even have that time remaining depending on how bad the condition of this TOB is right now.

Why not try to find a fellow cali DSM'er in your area who knows how. See if they'd be willing to help you out. You really only need a floor jack, some jackstands, and then obviously hand tools for the job. its a pretty basic replacement...just can be a little time consuming to do.

I would love to find someone local who can do it but so far I don't know of anyone guys =(. I'd love to learn for myself as well I just don't know if I even have all the tools. Big jobs like this scare me. There's no room for mess ups on this car since it's my dd. The more basic jobs for me take 3x longer than what they'd take for an average DSMer LOL and that's cause it's my first time doing everything I do.

If you talented enough with your hands and feeling in the blind you can just separate the tranny in the car and replace it. My friends 3g did that same thing we just split the motor and tranny in car just enough to fit my arm in and pulled the retaining clip off and old TOB off and back with the new. It really isnt that bad.

It sounds like the throw out bearing for sure which isnt that hard to change if you have some tools, time, and knowledge..

I'm right there with you i had a raddling sound thought it was the TOB but it wasnt.. this was my first tranny removal, it wasnt that bad it is really tiring getting the son of a bi*** back on though, make sure the motor is level :D on actual skill needed in removing the trans, id say its actually like a 4 out of 10... most of it requires strength and endurance.. Unless you have a tranny jack that would make life alot easier. i had to remove and install my transmission using my knees LOL. you will save tons of money doing your own work, just dont take short cuts and you will be good, drain your fluid before you drop the trans and tcase.

(btw it could not be the TOB. it could be something inner trans related.)

sounds exactly like a TOB to me. i dont believe the DSM has a constant ride TOB so when its disengaged the sound will cease. as soon as you engage the clutch pedal the noise starts, and will be rpm dependant because the TOB spins at engine speed when engaged.

if it were another bearing in the tranny you would hear it all the time.

and tranny removal isnt so bad, its just time consuming and labor intensive. if you bust it out then you can do it in an evening. best to have a buddy or two around tho, and a half rack of beer dont hurt.

Well I'm actually wondering now if it might be tranny fluid being low. Idk if this helps but any time I put slight pressure on the clutch pedal, it's almost as if the pedal vibrates. I really need to get a video soon. It's really hard to explain.
