My transmission on my 95 eclipse gst died last week and all I can find to replace it is one from a 98 eclipse gst. I was wondering If it will fit without problems? How will it hold up since it's a different year (I know it depends on condition of trans)? Will it lasts shorter ### of the year difference? Any mechanical problems? How will it drive (same, worst, better, etc.)? I'm guessing I will need new axles ### the ones from my 95 won't fit right? Any other information will help. Don't want to pay extra money in the future before going through with this. Thanks...

Thank you. A friend who went to tech school told me the axles wouldn't fit... Do you know anything about that?

i wouldent trust people who went to uti (or similar schools) LOL i have swapped several 2g fwd transmissions and as long as its out of a turbo 2.0 fwd 2g it will work! Nothing is different (besides the autos of course)

Thanks on the input. I have a MT.

Can you put a non turbo 98 transmission on a 95 eclipse gst? Will it fit properly and if so will that cause problems... Thanks (MT car by the way)

If something fits properly, it probably doesn't cause problems. ;)

That being said, unless the '98 is an Eclipse Spyder (convertible) with the SOHC 2.4L engine, there is no possible way a non-turbo '98 transmission will fit in your turbo '95. If the '98 is a Spyder, it is possible but will take some part swapping.

why would you want to is the real question two totally different trannys just buy a new gst tranny and save yourself the headache later on trust me.LOL

You've been very helpful no need to try to get dominant on a forum smart guy. Plus if you want to get technical there are alot of ways an apple could taste like an orange. By modifying it just like a car

you would have to swap axles, besides that it would fit, but the spyder non turbo trans is alot weaker and has shorter gears

Good stuff. I'm trying to figure out if this 98 transmission I found is from a turbo or a non turbo. The guy told me I have to swap axles. Does that mean it's from a non turbo spyder? Will I have to swap axles if it was a spyder turbo trans? My car is a 95.

i wouldent use one in a turbo car, and yes if hes saying you need to switch axles then it must be from a nt spyder, hold out for a turbo trans they are much stronger and less hassle

Would a 98 gst spyder transmission work on a 95 eclipse gst? I'm in big need of a tranny and it's the only one I can find Tia!

just got to point this out but i feel like i read thru a broken record getting to this point. the only way you should have any issue is if it was AWD, 95-96 had a different gear ratio in the front diff in the trans, also in the transfer case to compensate for having the same ratio in rear end in all 2g models. reading thru all of this it could be confused, all 2g talon/eclipse gst fwd use same bell housing, flywheel and clutch components the n/t 4g64 had a smaller clutch and is a downgrade. i feel this thread is brought back from the dead and should be locked

So how did it turn out after, what, 6 years now? Maybe finish the story and be done. We've all been wondering.....:idontknow:

Gst is a gst. Yes it will swap.
Just to clarify for the new poster and maybe future readers I was referring to a spyder vs hardtop. If they are both gst it's not an issue. If we are comparing 1g vs 2g etc. Or 1ga vs 1gb there are differences. 2g gst of any year/bodystyle should swap
