Tried posting this in the turbo/tech area but I can't post their yet due to lack of posts >_<

Anyway, Yesterday my turbo started acting funny. Was driving fine before and I was driving down the interstate when a 4G eclipse was messin with me. So I downshifted to play with him and when I put into the pedal the turbo spooled up pretty quickly and the whine was a little louder than normal but the power wasn't there, the stock boost gauge was showing higher boost than normal so I quickly left off the pedal and continued to drive home taking it easy. I got home and let the engine cool then popped the hood and checked all my hoses to make sure they were connected. I did find that the upper IC hose had very small places where air may be leaking out due to the battery rubbing against the hose from the previous owner. Working on getting that fixed. But, after alot of though and some searching/reading around these forums I'm not convinced that the cracks in the hose are what's wrong.

Some things that come to mind now, wastegate failure, boost leak, cracked/clogged hoses leading to WG. But I need a more definate way of testing that and options for repair. It's my daily driver, so when I drove it in today I was VERY easy on the pedal making sure that it did not reach what used to be normal peak boost at any point.

I bought this car 3 months ago from a guy, it needed a LOT of TLC and I've been giving it. I want to make sure I do the right thing here but with limited money and pretty decent mechanical skills, what are my options at this point?:ohdamn:
 
Sounds to me like a waste-gate issue if your boost was higher than normal however with the stock gauge I have no idea how much more boost that would actually be.

Do a cheap boost leak check to determine if you need to replace anything on the intake piping.

I ordered a boost leak tester, so waiting for it to get here. Yea, I know I coulda made one but this one has a gauge built on so it will be better. In the mean time, I KNOW that the cracks in the hose are a massive boost leaks. I'm gonna go ahead and get a replacement hose today, but I'd like to replace it with a metal pipe kit, along with all the IC pipes etc... just gotta save up for that. I figure the hose is cheap enough to replace and see what happens, cause everything else was fine. I know WG can randomly go bad...I'm just hoping that because the engine isn't receiving the air the MAS is reading that it's causing it to run poorly. I'll post later with the results...:pray:
 
*UPDATE* Still waiting on my boost leak tester. Did a temporary patch job on the hose primarily out of curiosity, then took a test drive. Everything seems better. I guess that having that big of a boost leak was letting the turbo push air too easily, resulting in what I THOUGHT was a boost spike...as mentioned above, without having an aftermarket boost gauge it's hard to tell if it's spiking or not. Got a new gauge on the way. However, the temp patch job I did still leaks air at full open throttle BUT it's not as bad as it was...atleast now I don't lose power when going up a hill at normal speeds. So, anyone know a vendor that sells the dejon UICP and will accept paypal?
 
If you are low on funds, go on ebay, look up netami gauges buy a boost gauge for $20, they are not the greatest but it is a million times better than the stock "gauge" then at least you can have an idea of how much boost you are actually seeing and your not going to break the bank, also I recieved my pr fmic finally and will no longer be needing my hard intercooler pipes, I'm pretty sure they are from punishment too, check my pics if you wanna see what they look like, I can throw in a type s knock off bov with it if your interested as I have 3 soon to be 4 when I open my fmic box LOL

there are only 3 pipes, L-pipe, upper pipe, and throttle body elbow, + cuplers n clamps, lookin $100 +shipping, 3% paypal fee w/out bov $120 + with bov, these pipes are for stock sidemount intercooler too, not sure if the l-pipe will work with stock t25 tho I'm not sure what turbo you are running, if you have 14b or 16g it will bolt right up to j-pipe, I paid 160 for them and they have only been on the car for 2 months
