hatch no good from inside

hey guys/gals i have a 2gb GS, my hatch wont open when i release the hatch release from the driver side's latch. if i opening from the outside with a key, it works. (ONLY when i hold the key in the right position.)

when i pull the latch from the inside, the hatch sounds like it unlocked, and the whole hatch clicks open as if its open, but once i go pull it up, it wont open, something is still holding onto the hatch!

so i put my key in the keyhole, and i have to HOLD the key into the right most position for it to open...if i just twist the key to "open" then let go, it gets stuck again.

any ideas? its so frustrating when i have to carry something with both arms, i have to open it with the key, and not only that, i have to hold the key then open it...please help!

i would take a look at the lock itself and then also buy new struts for the hatch.

Check the release mechanism and lock assembly as somthing is not working properly or isn't lined up right. When you release it from the inside, the hatch should pop up about half inch.
At least you narrowed it down and as Aproductions said, invest in new hatch struts as well if the hatch doesn't stay open or open itself after half way up.

what do i have to take apart to see the locking mechanism?

You'll need to remove the plastic trim covering it. Locate all of the bolts/screws holding it down and be sure you have them all. It'll be a bit tough to remove because it is also clipped in from the back (just pry it off to remove). Once you remove the trim you'll have access to the latch assembly.

i have the same exact problem! let me know how you fixed it. i havent really dug into it but i would like to know what i am getting into before i do it thanks!
