Hey guys, new to the forum and the first and only post before you guys helped alot. Appreciate it! Im new to eclipses completely and I just bought a 97 GSX. Now, the owner before me put a 1g head. There is also a 1g head i believe. He gave me the 2g stock head with the package. The car runs pretty good. Do you think I should leave that head on or put the stock 2g back on? What do your recommend I do at first for performance to get going before I start dropping big money into it? Lastly, When I first test drove it, it ran pretty good and had no stalling or hesitation. When I drove it home today, it would stop quickly and then gain power again. It would studder a lot. Just almost completely lose power for a second then go again and on and on. There isnt exhaust bolts holding the pipe to the manifold and there was a pretty big gap...could that be it??? Thanks REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP!

I'm gonna break this down by importance.

On a GSX the exhaust connects to a turbo before it connects to the manifold. Does it look like this?

Sounds like he kept the turbo. Got pictures?

As for upgrading? You need to do maintenance and fix what's broken before you do anything else. Then it's supporting mods before up grades. Doing them in the right order will save you headaches, money, and time. Follow the upgrade path listed cause skipping a step will end up breaking something. IE You need a boost gauge to tell how much boost your pushing before you buy a boost controller. And buying a boost controller and cranking it up won't get you very good results until you get free flowing exhaust. But you need more fuel for the higher boost, or you'll hit fuel cut or worse, detonation. So you need to do the fuel pump rewire. Which will help later when you get the bigger fuel pump. But a big fuel pump without a fuel pressure regulator or the right injectors will make it run really rich etc etc.

TL;DR: Spark plugs, wires, timing belt, oil change, coolant flush etc. Then boost gauge.

Pics?

Don't forget the basic maintainence VFAQs. Check the TECH section above. Oh...There SHOULD NOT be a huge gap between anywhere on that exhaust unless it's after the downpipe. Make sure you still have your turbo. If the bolts between the manifold and and the downpipe are either broken or missing, then you gonna need new bolts, washers, and a new exhaust o ring. I can't remember the name of it at the moment, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Good luck and keep us posted.

Can you post up pictures of the problems in question? Are you recirculating from the blow off valve? There should be a tube going from the outlet of the blow off valve back into the intake pipe. Pics of the engine bay would be a big help..There should be four bolts holding the turbo to the manifold, They do tend to come loose, they are 14mm, If you have a heat shield on the manifold,Then the bolts are under that.

Which gap youre talking about??? the one ,where downpipe connects to o2 housing? or the gap where turbo connects to the exhaust manifold?? If the gap is where turbo connects to the exhaust manifold.thats why your car studders.....

+1 on pics?

Keep that 1g head on there it flows better since it has bigger ports and more room to breath then that factory 2g head.

As far as mods I second Achelea's advice, maintenance first!

When I read pipe i thought of either the intercooler pipe, or downpipe. Judging by the 1g head mod im assuming he did some more modification to the car am i right? (FMIC, Intake, aftermarket downpipe) Pictures would deffinetly help along with more info. A huge gap shouldnt be there thats for sure.
