Hey guys- I'm new to this forum but I am not new to turbochargers. I am however new to the 4G63 and have a question on a turbo I found on eBay. I bought my 4G63 used from someone who used to run a large T88 on it. I checked compression as well as leakdown before I bought it and suprisingly the engine is in great shape- it was rebuilt before I bought it.

Anyways, my question- I wanted to buy a GT40 or 42 instead of the large T88 and have some usable boost for my track project. My goal is only 500-700hp and the turbo I found seems to be able to accomplish those goals. I'm wondering what you guys think about this turbo and the 4G63 though?

Garrett TA51 GT4088 GT4294 Turbo Turbocharger GT40 GT42:eBay Motors (item 320449641655 end time Nov-18-09 17:11:54 PST)

I plan to run 30+psi.

The problem with that turbo on ebay, is that its a "t6" foot print. Ive never heard of anyone running such a t6 anything on 4g63's.

For 500+hp in a colt, I would look into a Borg Warner turbo. Looks to me like you are looking for a deal. A borg warner s362 or s366 is cheaper then a gt4088 or 4094. It would work very nice with that engine you have.

If you plan on using that Ttoobig T6 good luck, sell it and get something from one of the vendors here.

I'd suggest reading the 'blog builds' as they are pretty informative when it comes to the higher HP goals of 500+whp.

Are you looking for 1320 or more autocross track? huge difference in the definition.

Well, I am familiar with this model turbo. We had the same turbo on our 5.7L Volvo workhorse (parts hauler) and it consistantly ran 30-40+psi and we never had to send it out for rebuild or anything- granted it wasn't used for racing but it was still used pretty much to capacity on a daily basis (Large diesel Volvo).

As far as the engine goes, it already has a balanced crank from small to big end- crank pulley to clutch assembly. Everything was balanced as an assembly incuding the rods and pistons. All of the work was done by Joe Castillo in La Mirada Ca. I have Wiseco 1400HD forged pistons bored .020 over with a 4G64 stroker crank and Eagle rods. The bottom end was built right, I'm not worried about that at all.

For fuel I have two fuel cells- one 10 gallon for 91 Ca swill and one 6 gallon for E85 or any racegas I prefer. I have it set with a Walbro 255 in the main piggybacked to the 6 gallon that has a Walbro 190lph. The 255 is good for 500-700hp as is and the 190 is there pretty much as a crutch (and so I can still use it as a DD without wasting my Patron)-I'm a tequila guy ya know and E85 aint cheap.

For injectors I have Seimans 1,000cc and for fuel management I'm using Megasquirt. I've used MS on MANY automobiles, complete with Innovative wideband and I also have a GTech RR just for lulz. It's actually an awesome tool when you combine it with datalogging. Not as good as a dyno but..very helpful on a cold night or a hot day driving up a mountain just to see whats goin on when where and why. I also have a hardwired knock light along with a J&S Safeguard:

So, I pretty much got my bases covered. Hondaslayer-I know you were trying to help with your comments about what I'll need (I do appreciate it) but I LOL'ed when you said "SAFC". LOL I'm so far beyond SAFC's (band-aids).

As far as the T6 footprint, I actually like that size a lot more than the T4 and going with a legit T6 you can pretty much guarantee that you're getting a GENUINE GARRETT turbo instead of a Chinacharger. Thats really what I'm after. Sure I'm trying to save money but, if I can get a good turbo for half the cost of a Garrett ball bearing unit with pretty much the same results...thats winRAR!

Basically- when your power goals are about 500-600hp, there is a point of diminishing returns when a ball bearing unit just because a moot point and something else to break. At least if I have any issues with it I can still feel at ease knowing it can be rebuilt due to being a journal bearing where ball bearing isnt as easy. Hybrids yes (journal bearing on the turbine side and ball bearing on the compressor side) but dual ball bearing....good luck with that.

Really what I wanted to know- or if you guys could point me to some threads. Are dyno sheets, 1/4 ET's, datalogs with GT40/GT42 turbos. I know that this TA51 is very close to the same size as both turbos. It's just an older model.

As far as goals, like I said 500-700hp but if I can squeeze more out then awesome. Theres always room for more horsepower.

Does anyone have any input?

I found that this company: Performance Techniques - Turbo, Turbos, and Turbochargers - For all your turbo needs! will sell a T4 housing that I can use instead of the T6 housing. I noticed that the seller added that the turbine wheel is a GT45. I checked through Welcome to TurboByGarrett.com and TurboMaster - distribuidores oficiales para España de turbocompresores Garrett, Holset y TiAL and the size of the turbine wheel seems correct. So it has a GT45 turbine wheel and a GT40-42 compressor wheel. Seems like I may be able to make 800-1000+hp for a fraction of the cost of a GT series no?
