I am new to the DSM scene and recently purchased a 97 eagle talon esi with a 420a. It blows white smoke when i first start it up, when i took it in to the mechanic i was told that the valve seals were worn, had low compression in cylinder1 and the mechanic suggested a rebuild. should i get the head rebuilt? buy a new one? what would be tha most cost effective route?

What I would do is take the head off myself and bring it to a machine shop. Get a valve job, with new valve seals, and check the head surface. If your a beginner try to find a buddy that has some mechanic skills. Or have the shop do it.

is there any else i shud look for while i have the head off? i know i would have to replace the head gaskets....what else could be causing the smoke and (now) crappy acceleration?

You should check the PCV, if you have low compression it will be blowing oil into the intake manifold thus causing smoke. If thats the case you might consider a full rebuild or a build-up. No need to surface the head unless the head gasket blows and if you do anyway get a micro-finish so you can use a MLS gasket.
