Hi Everyone,

I am replacing my front left wheel bearing and can't push the axle out of the wheel bearing. It's siezed up!

I crumbled the axle using a puller to push the axle out. What should I do next?
Thanks to all for advice.

same problem i had, pb blaster, heat, mushroomed the head of the axle had to get a new one. How did i get mine out, pulled the axle out of the trans, bolted the knuckle back up , and let my step-father hit it with a 5lb sludge.. One Hit and out it came, i was replacing the hub anyways, bearing was tost, but when you shroom the tip, need a new one. Good luck its a pitta.

I had the same problem with my Lancer ES recently and took the whole axle and hub assembly to my local machine shop and had them press it out with their awesome 20 ton press. Mine took a lot of pressure but in the end got them out.

OK thanks for all the advice everyone.

here's my next attemp:

1. Let it soak in blaster for a day.
2. Try to get the axle nut back on. If I can, take the 4 pound sledge to it. Then maybe the 8 pound sledge.

Otherwise if I can't get the castle nut back on I'll take the puller to it again and possibly split the axle like a piece of timber. We'll see!

where did you all buy new hub assemblys at and how much were they? I just replaced the motor in the car I just bought 96 eclipse gs and I bought new axles. But they wont come out the hub. We put it on a 2 ton press and bent the machine. I have soaked it for days in every kind of anti sieze, torched it, hammered it. Im not getting these out and the bearings are shot.

You need this type of puller...

If the threads aren't too screwed up on the axle yet, put the castle nut back on, but backwards so you don't mushroom the end as much. Then go back and forth between beating on the puller and beating directly on the axle with your sledge. It'll take time, but has always worked for me.

Look at this thread to help make a decision where to buy a replacement hub & bearing assembly.

Seriously just get a blow torch let it sit on by the splines for 20min and then take a hammer and bang on it. repeat that proccess till it comes out

idk we went through 2 bottles of setaline and saw no results and im just done messing with it. I found a guy that owns a junk yard he gave me a price of $125 for the whole hub assembly all arms and everything attached, wire harness attached to engine bay fuse box, and driver side window. I cant beat that price but Im worried about the junk yard parts beig shotty. I guess ill test my luck if it doesnt work out ill be buying the hubs off that link. Thanks housegsx.

Heat has worked for me in the past. Oxy-acetaline is the best, but MAP gas has worked too.

I've also walked into NAPA more than once to drop off a CV shaft core with the spindle still hanging off the end.

Well here's what else I did:

-let it soak in blaster for a day.
-dye grinded the deformed axle so I could get the castle nut on.
-put the castle nut on
-beat with slegde.....nothing
-put the puller on
-put a 4 foot pipe on the breaker bar and turned the puller till I broke the center shaft of the puller. At that point the center shaft had gone about 1 inch into the axle, but no axle movement.
-then heated with torch and beat the broken center shaft of puller till I bent the puller center shaft.
-repeated torch and beat on puller

NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!

(glad I have two cars)

what's next?????

Can I cut through the cv joint cup with a cut off wheel or is it too thick? Then At least I can get to the hub bolts.

Can anyone direct me to a thread/article/photo of a cv joint taken apart so I can see how thick the cup is?

Thanks in advance.

You need the puller I mentioned. The type you bolt on to the lugs and tighten with a hammer.

What type of torch are you using? Which gas?

Ive got the same problem, when i did the motor job i had to pull the whole strut wheel bearing carrier and the axles in order to get the motor and trans out, good thing mine doesnt need wheel bearing yet! my day is coming im sure. after it was done and all back together i even drove it around with the cv nuts loose to see if it would free them up, yea right.

I had this same exact problem with my driver's side axle! Wow. So frustrating- I know what you're going through, and all I could do what pretend to take it like a man and get a new bearing and axle. The axle was a PITA to find. If I remember correctly, I cut the old axle because you can't pull it through the knuckle.

Well I tried again today:

-Map gas for 30 minutes and beat axle with sledge.....nothing

Housegsx I like the puller but no local store will have one.

Is another option to pull the knuckle and take to a machine to shop to get pressed out or else get cv axle cut off to get to hub bolts?

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

You might need to take it to shop and have them try to press it out.

I ended up grinding the cup down with a mix of a bench grinder and a dremel. I just took the knuckle/hub/axle all off as one piece. I would NOT want to try grinding it with just a dremel. The bench grinder is what made it doable. I could have tried taking it to a shop, but I figured I'd try the grinder first.

If you have ABS, be careful not to damage the sensor.

If you are using Map gas out of one of the little bottle, sorry to say it thats not enough. I tried using map gas out of those little yellow bottles tons of times, and it never seems to be enough. You need to get a Oxy-Acetylene torch, And heat it up till its red, then try it. Those little things look like there getting it hot, but its not hot enough.

Yeah I was using one of those little yellow bottles. I lit it up and positioned it on the axle and stared at it for a half hour.

I don't know anything about oxy acetylene.

-How much?
-where to buy? Menards/Home Depot/farm and barn
-Any certain kind?

Thanks again
