Any way to back the trans off the block alittle

Should I be able to just back the trans off the block so I can stick a washer up on the pivot ball.A friend of mine did it without pulling the trans but I can't get it done.
 
actually, you MAY be able to a little. you must use the two bolts from the starter, take all the bolts out of the bellhousing, remove the whole trans mount, now take the two starter bolts and thread them into the two top bellhousing bolt holes (these bolts ar longer than the reg bellhoung bolts, so once you start them in, they will let you be able to pull the trans back some without the splline falling off of the clutch spline. now i did this to install a bellhousing dowel, so im not sure if its enough room to do what you need to do
