I searched the forms but i didn't find anyone with a problem like this. I have a 92' talon awd. For the last month when the car is cold if i go above 45 mph the speedo starts climbing and bouncing around fluctuating about 20 mph or so. It doesn't do it all the time but if i accelerate fast i can get it do do it all the time, but only when it's cold. Also after letting it do that for a couple minutes it will start to make this horrible noise in the dash. It sounds like gears grinding at high speeds, but as soon as i slow the car down to like 20 mph it stops all together...ideas anyone? thanks

I have a 91 Talon, and know it has a mechanical speed cable that connects to the transmission directly below the throttle body near the motor mount on the bottom near the firewall. I would figure the same will be with your car.

The other couple posts are very helpful, and should be done before the following... but if they don't work, you are looking at a mechanical problem rather than an electrical short.

The cable can be easily screwed off by hand, so I would definitely check the line from that connection to the firewall where it goes to your stock gauge cluster. Check the connection and/or remove it to see if it moves freely. You might need to remove the battery and battery bracket to get to it.
