oh and i posted here because i cant post anywhere else, and note: the little rectangular placard that most turbos come with to identify it is missing or non-existent

A quick google shows that it was the turbo used in the Merkur (Ford) and some SVO applications. It looks like it's a T3 turbo. Here is what I saw on it for some better info. TurboCharger

I dated a girl in highschool who owned a Merkur and it was a wonderful car with plenty of punch. To be honest though, with a lot of shaft play and a relatively unknown turbo, unless you have a lot of experience, I'd say go the safe route to prevent spending to much money on trying to get this little beastie to work. I can't tell you if this turbo is good or not, just some info of it's origins and my own personal butt experience in a Merkur.

Just by seeing the word "Airesearch" on the turbo you can determine what it came from? I think not.

We need more information on the turbo.

AiResearch usually means the turbo is made by Garrett.

From the pictures I find it looks to be a Garret T3. No idea on the red paint though, probably just something someone slapped on.

Could be a t3/t4, but in any event that turbo is trash from the sound of it. I think you should skip the less important facts for now, and move on to the real concerns - are there any cracks in the exhaust mani it came from? If not, then get yourself a nice t3/t4 to bolt to it and call it good. That turbo has so many applications, it will take a bit of research and numbers from the turbo to identify it, but you are spinning your wheels worrying about a shagged turbo IMO. That thing doesn't look worth trying to rebuild from the outside, who knows how bad the inside is....

If it truly is a T3, then is also probable that you have a T3 flanged manifold on your car. A quick shot of the hotside of the turbo and/or the manifold it came off of would tell us lots. It is also possible it's some sort of Frankenstein turbo that has a DSM flanged turbine housing.

If its a turbo block, the 1st gens also had oil squirters, both in the awd and fwd. The actual block casting is actully the same, they just have slightly different auxillary stuff, like the oil filter housing being different, and the main coolant pipe coming off the water pump. Other than that, (there might be something else on the outside different, but nothing else comes to mind at the moment), the acutal blocks are the same, unless it's not a turbo block.

OMG big frikkin sigh of relief thanx guys, oh and i overpaid but to be honest i paid DRUMROLL please 3k LOL i know iknow, but i had to have it and ive only seen 2 in the last 3 yrs so.....theres my excuse :) but im happy with it even tho i only drove it once :(

Craigslist or Ebay in the NewYork area and you pay 3k for a non running 1stgen in that condition? Im sorry.

it was running with no problems when i bought it in jersey, however i dismantled it when i got it ### im building it for circuit, and verrrrry little street use, occasional. so yeah i know i payed much but i wantd it and its not in bad condition. No rust no dents clean title and a powerplant i can work on.

its a mercedez benz 4 cyl turbo-diesel, i pulled one just like that one 2 months ago , and is actually running in a honda civic, this one pulls very good. The merkur turbo is a garrett with a a/r 60 compresssor housing, and the inlet have 2 bolts for the intake tube.

well as for the turbo ive lost hope i think im just gonna throw it out, my plans with the new motor are big. Im planning for 500 daily and about 700 track but i want a solid reliable 500 on pump (reliable and mitsu dont go together i know) I already had my block decked and now im sending out the head any ideas on anything i should do while its there? i wanna throw in valve springs and valves while im at it and i heard somewhere lifters should be changed car has 134k on it so. anything else i should do let me know porting i will do myself unless i find someone who is really reliable.
