Is there a way to tell TRE transmission?

I was wondering if there is a way to tell if TRE has done anything (rebuild etc...) to a transmission.

Do they:

-stamp it
-sticker
-tag it

etc...

The car I'm looking at supposedly has a TRE rebuilt transmission, but has no reciepts. Said it was that way when he bought it. he didn't mention a stage so it made me a little more skeptical...

Just wondering if there is anything special I should look for or should notice if say it had been rebuilt by them.

Thanks

I believe they actually put your name or initial on it. Stamped. Along with a number I believe, but I'd have to look at mine to be sure.

Bringing up an old thread. I'm considering buying a used trans suposedly with a quaife and stage 2 TRE rebuild. The seller has no reciepts, but gave me the serial numbers. However, Jon @ TRE hasn't returned any of my phone calls or sent me a reply for my email.

The trans has stampings on it, they were done with what looks to be an alphabetical punch set. It reads: "JM DSS"

any thoughts on that?

Also, the trans has grey RTV gushing out of every mateing surface, as well as a small amount where the cv seals are. Anyone else have this after a TRE build?

Hmm be weery of the seller....I always save receipts, specialy for a big job like a trans rebuild. There are a ton of people selling cars on craigslist saying the engine is 'freshly rebuilt'. If it has a quaif diff I wonder if you could look where the front CV shafts go in and see anything that would destinguish the aftermarket part?

First two should be initials, but DSS used to be Diamond Star Specialties. Eh, who knows?

this is what my TRE tranny has on it

I bought a brand new stage 3 from Jon about 5 months back & mine was the same, what was done was written in black marker on the bellhousing & there was an orange tag with the details, also written in black marker. The tranny itself has no stampings or markings, we actually asked why he didn't do something for identification of his trannies & I think his reply was basically "we know what trannies are ours" (basically because he does internal mods that the other shops don't).

My trannie was also sealed with grey RTV, they said that was the best, not sure if thats always what they've used. Though it wasn't gushing out all over the place, they actually commented how neat their looks when re-assembled, where as alot of other places put on way to much & gushes out all over the place.

Another thing was grease was applied to most of the threaded holes on the tranny (mine was red but they also used blue on my buddies), even on some locations that aren't used/bolted up. So may see traces of this on some holes.

Finally, on a few of the bolts they also had flourescent orange "tamper" compound.

All these things you can see on the above tranny.

Yeah the tranny is very clean, unlike the one I pulled out...hhmm it has gushing grey RTV. Now I wonder if it already had one of Jons trannys in it

But the shift linkage looks stock, so it may have been just rebuilt by someone

Mine is stamped. I can't find the camera at the moment but I'll take a pic later. It has my initials followed by a number. It's stamped on a flat surface below the passenger side axle.
