Alright, i've been doing a little research on this and i've found out that apparently when the knock sensor detects knock... lets just say because of a lower octane fuel it either retards or advances timing. Do we have variable valve timing or something? I thought this was a feature of Mivec. I have not seen a solenoid anywhere on my car that adjusts timing. I'd like to get to know a little more about this seeing as all I have ever owned besides this is a Nissan Sentra and do not understand how our DSMs' do the same type of thing. Confused

the CPS "cam positioning sensor" ajusts the timing on a dsm....well the 2.0...but thats how u adjust the timing on our cars its simple lossen 2 bolts slightly and twist LOL waalaa magic:sneaky::dsm:

Oh. The car also does this by itself ? with the CPS ? So the CPS is like the CVTC solenoid that I had on my sentra i guess? or am I missing the point.

yes the ecu is suppose to do that...i wouldnt know from experiance but the cps is your timing adjustment if u want to advance or retard your timing

yup, the CPS is also used to adjust the base timing. Also note that this applies only to 6bolt motors as those are the ones equipped with the adjustable CPS. You cant adjust the base timing on a 7bolt unless if you have something like DSMLink installed.

The timing retard/advance is a function the ecu uses to regulate ignition timing on these cars. It is, among other things, an engine management/driveability function. DSM's do not have variable valve/camshaft timing. You are correct in that one of the inputs lto the ecm for ignition timing is the knock sensor (others include tps, temp., rpm, maf., and probably more that have slipped my mind at the moment). Hope this helps clear the confusion.

Thanks, that last post clarified it for me. I had forgotten that timing could be changed through the ignition. After having that damn nissan anything adjustable and i automatically think .. that it is in the mechanics / angle of the cams. Again Thanks:thumb:
