Cobble Hill,
what could be the problem, it feels like a slipping clutch but my speedo jumps with the tach.

the bolts in the bracket that hold my intermidiate shaft to the block snapped off but i am thinking that isnt the only problem.

The speed sensor for the speedo is located in the tranny not at the wheel. If your speedo jumps with rpm, but the car doesn't gain speed, you've probably got a problem with axles or driveshafts or possibly the tranny itself. I'm not certain on where the sensor reads as it relates to the center diff, but I'd sure be taking a look at that intermediate shaft and fixing the bracket you mentioned.

The speedo is driven off of the front diff. I would say you are spinning your front diff -- meaning your front diff spider gears are broken or one of your front axles are. This would be hard on your viscous because your rear tires are driving the car while the front is 'spinning' faster. The only other thing it could be is your speedometer head.
