So I took my 96 gsx to get an inspection, and surprisingly it failed.....
Now you might be thinking its a bad cat or what not but that wasn't the case. The guy tried to connect to the obd port but nothing came up. Its definitely an electrical problem but where should I start to diagnose this problem? I need to get this car on the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!:dsm:

Are you getting the car smogged? I had the same problem with my prevoius DSMs. I just went to another smog station and it worked.

I would say start simple and physically inspect the connector. Make sure the wires are securly connected. May have to bust out an ohm meter and check the leads for power. Its a start. Think pins 3 and 4 are ground. Cant remember which one is the power though.

Does the check engine light first come on when you turn the key to the on position?

Although that would be interesting if the above situation solves it. I dont see many OBD2 connections working off and on.

Yes the MIL does come on when i first turn the key on. Tomorow i will check using your suggestion. Ive taken it to two inspection stations already and no luck...:(

Check the cigarette lighter fuse. That has to do with a lot of ODBII connectors. Not sure about these cars though.

it imght not be an electrical problem, did whoever scanned it go in through both manufacturer specific and global OBDII? ive seen it where they will connect to one but not the other and vice versa. and the only thing ive ever seen this on is a 2g dsm.

if its the same as 96-98 evo you have to join wires to pins 1 and 4 on the obd socket for diagnostic mode .

the guy couldnt get any info from the port.....

YES...I have had this happen to me also. They are connecting fine, but they aren't getting any info off the port. The guy testing the car always asks me if I have disconnected the battery recently. I always reply NO. Then he just used some other type of test. He revved my engine to 2500 rpm and tested it somehow

Did the guys at the smog station give you a 1-800 number to call? Worst case scenario is that the DMV will do the smog test on your car. The same thing happened to my bro's Mirage.

its just acts like its not hooked up at all

yes... thats what ive said twice now. if the person testing doesnt know how to do the generic obdII testing i'd find someone who does.

tell them to test under "mode $06" if they dont know what that is he's worthless and shouldnt have a job

No. He is saying there is no connection. The main cause for this is no power to the connector. When it is doing this you can't get anything from the port, that includes global(generic) data. This is why I said to check the cigarette lighter fuse. Most cars use this fuse for the dlc.

Problem solved guys, thanks for all your input!!!!!!!!! Turns out it was one of the engine bay fuses. Thanks again everyone!!!!!!!!!

Glad you got it fixed. Can you mark the thread as resolved for us? All you have to do is click where it says "thread tools" at the top of the thread. Then click on "mark this thread resolved."

Edit: Damn you Brian :)
