Hello everyone. I am going to be assembling my motor soon and I was wondering if I can get something clarified. I have read quite a bit on doing the timing belt. I know that the exhaust and timing marks have to be aligned at 3 oclock and 9 oclock with the dowel pins at 12 oclock. How about the 9 oclock exhaust side and 3 clock intake side. Do they have to be exactly lined up to the valve cover plane? Or is that not relevant? I was checking my motor out and I can line up the marks that meet in the middle but not the ones on the outside... am I making sense here? Thanks in advance.

I'm talking about the circled areas on the revised picture. Does it have to be lined up with the cylinder head plane as well?

Yeah those should go aligned I wish I had a better pic to show you though. there should be a zinc plate thats flat on top and level to your VC and thats where you should set your mark

They are close but actually do not line up because they are not 180* apart from the other mark.

The same sprockets can be used on either the exhaust or intake cams. Depending on which cam it used on one or the other mark will be used to timing. While the intake cam dowel pin is 0* (12 o'clock) the exhaust cam dowel pin is 3'5" advanced and the mark reflects this.

Thanks steve. I figured they wouldnt line up, because when I was lining them up it seem impossible for the outside ones to line up as well on the cylinder head plane. Thanks again.

Thank you cano too.

line the notches up first and then zip tie the belt to the gears. After that you can move them together to align the dowels, once you start lining up the other sprockets and put the belt on them it all starts to come together.
