This thread was in the cylinder head and block section, but after reading the sticky. Figured I would create here to be on the safe side. Sorry mods for the double thread. Please delete my other thread.

Hello everyone. I took my crankshaft out and look what I found...

From what I could see there were no raised areas on indentations. I took it to 2 machine shops. One imformed me that it is too deep to polish out and that they would not recommend running it. The other machine shop told me that it is too deep to polish out but it would be okay to run the crank like it is so long as it is in specs and everything. I have been trying to find a crankshaft locally and I am yet to find one in good shape. I have also dealt with a dsm vendor that sent me a crank but it is not in usable condition. I am to a point where I might need to spend the money on an oem crank. What do you guys think. Should I just have it polished/magnafluxed and use it as long as it is in specs? I'm not trying to build a monster. My goals are a daily driven 350-400hp. Definitely no more than 500hp ever. However I want something that is a reliable daily driver that will have longevity. Sorry for the long post. Thanks.

Is that the timing cover end? Those look like tool marks. (Screwdriver)WTF
I would have a hard time convincing myself to run that one although the potential to cause damage should be negligible as long as the rest polishes out pretty well.

Yes that is on the tbelt side, but I dont see how a screwdriver could have made those marks. The crank journals are pretty hard. From the mark it looks like maybe it got nicked on it's way in the motor.

Come on everyone let's get this thread going. I need more opinions.

Although I HIGHLY doubt it would be a big deal to polish it up, and run it as is. It would really suck to get over the 1000 mile mark and suddenly throw a bearing. Especially since the motor is already apart. I would keep hunting, or even seach Ebay if you have to and pick up another used crank, have it checked and polished. Might be better to spend a little now, rather than have to replace bearings, crank, and rods later. 1 replaced part is better than many replaced parts.. :| Tough call no matter what you do.. good luck!

That's exactly what my thoughts were. It's just so hard to find a crank locally and I am very hesitant to buy another from out of state after my experience with a well know vendor. After talking to the second machine shop I started to think about if it was really okay to run it or not. The machinist did sound pretty confident in the fact that crank can be ran as is after polishing and such. After talking to him I am left with a difficult decision.

I would just have the journals polished and run it. As long as there are no points on the journals you should be fine. If that is the worst damage you should be fine using it.
