Im trying to replace my axle seals because I believe they are leaking. Im trying to take them out of my junk trans before I try removing them from my trans thats currently on my car. I took out what I think is the seal that I need to be replacing but its really small and I dont understand how it would even really act as a seal because when I put it back in it place, it feels really loose and seems like it would let gear oil past it. Anyways, heres some pics that I took to try and help explain my situation.

This picture is with the seal still in place.

This Picture is with the seal out. Is this the only thing I need to get at the dealership/parts store and replace in order to fix my leak?

Heres with the seal out again. You can see that there is a little round metal spring that goes around the seal. Where is this spring supposed to be once the seal is back in the trans? I put the seal back in and it just feels really loose like it isnt seated properly.

Is this little rubber seal the only thing I need or is there a whole assembly that I need to get. Im just confused as to what I need to fix my leak. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes the rubber you're holding and the metal piece that's bent up in your trans are molded together. You need to pry that metal out, get a new seal and tap it in with a large socket that mates with the metal ring portion of the seal. Can't reuse old ones they don't come out nicey nice.

Ok, if I wasn't on a government computer where I could see the pics, I could tell you whats wrong, but for now I'm just going to go off of your description. The axle seal that you are talking about is a rubber piece that is encased inside a metal ring. The ring runs along the outside of the rubber seal, and has a lip on the side that faces OUT of the transmission. The spring that you are talking about would be around the inner portion of the seal. So when you take the whole seal out, you should have the rubber piece, spring, and metal ring/lip. If the ring isn't on there, check the tranny again and make sure you didnt rip the rubber out of the ring. When you put a new seal in to your good trans, take a socket that fits on that metal lip and use a mallet or something to hammer it in. Make sure it goes in evenly or you'll leak like a sieve.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I have removed the metal ring with a seal puller that I bought today so I have everything out now. The passenger side is completely different, as it is just a rubber seal. Since I couldnt really find any good pictures of what I was looking for, For future references for you AWD guys that are replacing your axle seals, here are some pics of what to look for:

This is the driver's side seal taken apart:
