I just recently bought my 96 talon from my brother, who knew a guy that rebuilt parts. He made a hybrid turbo, and according to my brother's profile on here, it is a 16g/46t. I can find information on the 16G, but nothing on a 46t. When it was installed several years ago, I remember them saying it was the equivelant or better than a big 16G. Has anyone heard about such a hybrid? Like I said, I am new to this area, and do not have experience of knowing the feel or characteristics of different turbos.

I'm getting ready to replace my head gasket, so I'll be sure to take some pictures while im down there. I know that the silver intake side is the big 16G for sure. I am pretty sure that they swapped out the turbine wheels to fill up the space a little more. As far as wheel measurements, I'm not sure I want to take the turbo apart, but I can definately get detailed pictures of the housings.

Not sure if this helps or not but the # stamped on the compressor cover suggests this turbo started life as a small 16g

Sounds like a 46-trim Garrett compressor was installed into the Small 16G compressor housing, mated to the TD05H turbine.

It's essentially a Frank Level 1 20G built beneath a TD05H compressor cover instead of the 20G's TD06 cover....great for a stock-appearing class or if you want to fool your competition in some friendly local racing.

The 46-trim compressor isn't well known, and it has an ENORMOUS backplate in comparison to a 20G compressor wheel. The small amount of airflow you gain over a 20G wheel wouldn't offset the added lag given by the huge backplate. You probably would've been better off with a 20G wheel.

Thanks alot for all the information. All I ever remembered them mentioning when my brother installed the turbo was to tell everyone else it was a small 16G. This helps out alot, as far as knowing more about the capabilities of the turbo. It also explains why the turbo takes quite a bit of time to spool up to the designated PSI except under WOT conditions.
