well im back, sold my last tsi over a year ago to get an srt-4 and now im back, still have the srt but dsm is always fun, well i just picked up a 91 tsi fwd from a repair shop and it had been siting for at least 3 years that i know of, some kid brought it there and they told him that the CAS was bad and he didn't want to pay for a new one so he abandoned the car, after a long drawn out legal process i got the title and got it to my house, its been about a week now, i have changed the oil, put new gas in it, coolant, new spark plugs, and come to find out its a 90 engine, but the shop said they could get it to start but that it would just die out after about 10 sec of running, but this is what i have now and i have some questions, first off i cant hear the fuel pump prime, but if you take the banjo bolt off the fuel filter and crank gas flows out, but nothing when the key is at start, when it should be priming , second i don't think im getting any spark, i have done a volt test on the 4 screws that are on the back side of the coil and im getting 12v there but when you take a spark plug out and ground it on a bolt and crank it, nothing... i have put over 8 different coil packs on it and 4 different transistors , and 3 sets of wires, and the same thing, thought it might be the CAS so i put a new one on and nothing changed, i threw a 91 auto ecu in it and i got the check engine light that comes on and stays on, according to the book that means that the ECU is bad but im doubt full, no i think the first ecu the 91 manual that came with the car is bad when you turn the key on the boost gauge doesn't go to zero and the check engine light doesn't even flash most of the time, i think there might be a bad ground somewhere or broken wires, im going to get another ecu next week but I still can’t come to a reason i have no spark i mean i have held the wire and not ever got a lil shock. ... Any ideas / thoughts would be awesome, i really want to get this car running, thanks guys :D

No one else will help you so ill chime in.

Look for the gold box under the dash, under the stereo and you will find the MPI relay, it turns on the fuel pumps, and supplies power to sensors, coils, etc. There is 2 sets of relays, one for accessories and one for ignition. First turn is for acc. On the last half is when the relay under the stereo clicks, and that activates the fuel pump, coils, and starter. Listen for a click, if no click then check your MPI fusible link, it’s a 20a in a box with 3 other fuses, If not blown test MPI for power and or replace.

If you just turn your key to acc and go to the engine bay and jump a small wire from the positive side of the battery to the signal wire on the starter “black wire, white strip” remove it and touch the contact on the starter and turn the car over; you can test for spark, here you would want to repeat the step you have once tried already “unplugging a spark wire and put the plug in it, leaned against some metal, and watch it while you give it a quick turn over. Also like mentioned if you leave that signal wire off, you can turn the key ahead and listen for the fuel pump by turning the key to crank.

Advice for others that try to help him. It’s a 91 TSi FWD with a 90 Engine. 91-94 Swap was completed I believe from talking to him.
